By defeating the Delimitation and Constitutional Amendment Bill, the opposition parties have done a great disservice to the Nation. With the freeze under Article 81 set to end after the first Census conducted post 2026, the forthcoming census exercise will reset seat distribution purely on population, potentially leading to a steep decline in representation for Southern, North-Eastern, and smaller states. The NDA’s proposal was a sincere effort to preserve federal balance, protect the voice of Southern, North-Eastern, and smaller states, and ensure 33% representation for women. It recognised that states which have performed well on key development indicators should not be penalised in the democratic structure. It is unfortunate that political agendas have prevailed over long term national interest. Opposing parties should seriously question themselves; what have they achieved ? While the reality is that the numbers would come down for the south and women reservation bill has been postponed ! Justice is rendered neither to the south nor the women! If 2026 census were to come the situation would be worse off for the south, further penalised for being disciplined in the matters of family planning.

They are clever in not being lired by 50% which is nothing but status quo. But tgey know this will not remain as such as after 2026 tge delimitation exercise will be statutory exercise and there are no constitutional guards to protect them from future readjustment. They would want another freeze for next 25 years on enhanced numbers. And that freeze shall be constitutionally provided. That is their unsaid demand.

Ask yourself, why India needs to increase Lok Sabha seats from 550 to 850? ANSWER IS - NOT NEEDED. The idea was to comply to the constitutional mandate of “One person, one vote, one value” given under Art 81. Meaning elector to elected ratio shall remain uniform throughout India with few exceptions. Currently vote value of an Individual in Uttar Pradesh is less than that of Tamilnadu. This readustment exercise has been kept in abeyance, due to the grievances of south Indian states, since 1976 with 42nd Amendment, and with 84th Amendment it was blocked till 2026. Now if you are readjusting the seats by uniformly increasing the seats of each state by 50% then you have not complied with the mandate of Art 81 about “One person, one vote, one value”, as even after enhancement of seats of each state, the vote value of an individual in UP will be less than that of Tamilnadu. Then for whom this seat enhancement from 550 to 850 is being done? Someone will say “women reservation”. But why women be given reservation only by increasing the total Lok Sabha seats and why not give them 33% seats in existing 550 member house (read 543). So in essence, the increased seats are only to facilitate the males in the house (across the party). Now calculate the expenses which will be towards 300 extras seats in lok sabha and 2000 extra seats in vidhan sabha. But this no body will talk. When CITIZENS are gone PARTY WORKERS are born.
