@FeserEdward And just so we are clear, proportionality does not mean the same level of force and the exact same number killed. That is an invention of activists. Kill 1200 people, your state gets leveled. Seems fair to me.

@FeserEdward People that blather about proportionality basically believe that terrorists have immunity and that acts of war should never trigger actual war in response. Meanwhile Japan killed millions throughout Asia. Leveling that empire seems quite proportional. Same for Hamas.

Setting aside whether the allegations in the Kristoff piece are true, can we at least agree that the NYT’s decision to publish this in the Opinion section is ill-advised to say the least? Surely the editors knew that such extreme allegations, made at a time like this, with antisemitism on the rise, will draw intense scrutiny and outrage. Surely they knew that fact-sourcing of the kind Kristoff uses requires more, not less, verification. Publishing this as Opinion seems like the editors trying to put something out there while evading accountability if things go wrong, as they have in the past when the NYT reported on alleged Israel war crimes. The whole thing just looks so underhanded.

If you want a handle on the Trump-Xi summit, this is an excellent podcast conversation with former ambassador to China @RNicholasBurns about the issues and how they're likely to be addressed.

In a new bonus episode of “The Foreign Affairs Interview,” @RNicholasBurns examines the issues that will take center stage at the Trump-Xi summit—and considers how this meeting will shape the future of U.S.-Chinese competition. foreignaffairs.com/podcasts/when-…

I appreciate the intense interest in my column. For skeptics, why not agree on Red Cross and lawyer visits for the 9,000 Palestinian "security" prisoners? If you think these abuse allegations are false, such monitoring visits would be protective. So why not?
Nicholas Kristof@NickKristof

This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. We should be able to find common ground in opposing rape. Here's a gift link to the article: nytimes.com/2026/05/11/opi…

The most ironic part of LeBron hate is that, by simply hating on him at this stage, is to admit he is the best ever, since you're admitting you hold him to a standard you don't hold any other player to. Why? because literally no other player ever has gotten to the stage LeBron is right now. It's a hilarious paradox, to criticize LeBron now is to admit he's the best ever. But that's what LeBron haters get for allowing their pathological hatred/insecurity to override their common sense for the last 23 years.

@Megankstack It's hilarious seeing these people who were so credulous as to claims of rape on October 7 turn into utter skeptics when it comes to much more plausible accounts of rapes in Israeli prisons. Almost like they're bigots or something

14 people telling a journalist they were raped is, imo, too many to dismiss. Especially in a society where shame/stigma around sexual assault is even greater than in the US. Incredible how many people just will. not. consider that their pre-existing view might be flawed.

Hi @NickKristof, I don't understand why you are misrepresenting the medical literature on this topic. No cases of canine rape have ever been confirmed in the medical literature, and the very few cases of rectal injuries that are described are documented as being initiated by sexual/curious zoophilia on the part of the human, not an assault on an unwitting human on the part of the dog. Moreover those very same medical journals specifically state what you are claiming as "never been described, nor is such a such a thing likely". Finally, none of this deranged nonsense was needed to bring light the other cases in your article. Why tarnish your article with pseudoscience, with a a citation to a twitter post by a deranged drunkard (who himself ironically engaged in sexual misconduct) no less? I really don't get it.

I share @megankstack's exasperation, but to those who say that canine rape is impossible, despite the many Palestinians who have described it, I'd note that at least three different medical journal articles discuss rectal injuries in humans from anal penetration by dogs. Sigh.
