People harassing me for tweeting a colleague's piece on Israel should...know more about Israel! Ie, maybe Google "administrative detention Palestinians" so you at least realize these are probably not people who tried to bomb Israel, as so many of you are screaming at me.

I have confidence in NYT Opinion fact checking I don't know anything about dog rape/don't want to. But, see above You'll never find me knocking down rape reports. I've seen too much of the war-sexual assault-political violence nexus and believe rape is always possible.

Amazing, I didn't know it was possible to take this much incoming for a story I didn't even write! I'll repeat what I've said: I think the story is good & important I think Kristof is a great reporter I think 14 is too many people saying they were raped to dismiss out of hand...

You guys are @’ing me in so many tweets about dog rape, Nazis, and me raping other people that I’m afraid I’m missing most of these lovely messages 🤷🏻‍♀️

@NickKristof I get why people don’t want to believe this. I don’t want to believe it either. It’s one of the foulest allegations I’ve ever heard.

I share @megankstack's exasperation, but to those who say that canine rape is impossible, despite the many Palestinians who have described it, I'd note that at least three different medical journal articles discuss rectal injuries in humans from anal penetration by dogs. Sigh.

@LevineJonathan @BlueBoxDave I don’t know anything about it! Haven’t even read the piece in question. It seems to me if you have a complaint you should email Michelle or one of the editors.

Completely false. Opinion fact checkers are tough and rigorous. I once had to defend describing a pair of trousers I’d described as “khaki” bc the fact checker scrutinizing the photo I’d sent to verify details thought “stone” was more accurate. Really you have no idea.
Jon Levine@LevineJonathan

The true tell of course is that this was published in "opinion" — requiring a much lower standard for accuracy If the New York Times really had the goods on such explosive allegations, they would have run this in the news section — like the much more exhaustively documented "Screams Without Words"

14 people telling a journalist they were raped is, imo, too many to dismiss. Especially in a society where shame/stigma around sexual assault is even greater than in the US. Incredible how many people just will. not. consider that their pre-existing view might be flawed.

@BlueBoxDave Opinion and news are separate structures. Different writers, different editors. I’ve never heard of a piece being “given” from one to the other. That’s not how it works. If I’m working on a piece for opinion I have no idea whether news side might be working on the same topic.

But the standard is different. An opinion piece can gather first hand information, I do that all the time, and I can say, here’s what I think it means. For the news side to say “X is happening,” a far greater vetting of facts is needed. They don’t have it, so they gave it to opinion.

@BlueBoxDave Right, as opinion writers we can express opinions. But we can’t invent facts to support those opinions, which is what the original tweet claims. The idea that Times opinion pieces are not picked apart for truth is, in my experience, totally wrong.

@Megankstack That’s not John’s point. As opinion writers we can connect dots and draw conclusions. Straight news can’t. They can’t connect the dots on facts alone here, so they made it a heart tugging opinion column that is “just asking questions.”

@ejohnjoyce @amyinhinckley I meant khaki as a material/style description. I had always thought that khakis were heavy cotton pants in any of a range of light tan colors.

They want transcripts, recordings, photos, notes, text messages, anything to back up what you wrote. They get contacts for everyone I interview and call them and ask God knows what. I’ve had to put them in touch with my mom to verify details in a personal piece. They CHECK.

If they’re willing to blow themselves up (which is how most of them got into Israeli prisons), let’s just assume they’ll also lie about getting raped by a dog.

Exactly. Toxic “honor culture” plus the fact that (as we’re seeing now) evil people would immediately call them liars were strong deterrents to coming forward. Yet so many did. This is the tip of the iceberg, yet hasbara propagandists cling to their bedtime story about the IDF.
