I have been looking in detail at election results in South Africa for a very long time. There are some weaknesses in our systems that allow various types of errors to go through to the published results. I have long envisaged a system to identify and check anomalies in a systematic way, and have even built a couple of prototypes over the years. I am now plunging in and using Claude Code to design and build this system. The task was always too large to accomplish on my own, but is just about achievable with AI planning and coding. It is still a daunting exercise, and I feel like the old Wile E. Coyote chasing Road Runner treading air off the edge of a cliff. I have learned a lot from Claude, but I also need to make corrections to the output it produces. I have promised this before, but I will quite soon publish my new website layout with the results of the last two NPE and two LGE elections in an accessible format, which has been a big part of the whole process. Here is one example of a VD from 2021 with multiple fairly obvious errors.

@zilevandamme Accent shaming is one of those unspoken things that we should discourage. I, too, have a very strong Afrikaans accent. And my extended family mocks African accents, to my horror. An accent isn't a sign of a poor education or a lower level of intellect. #dieonthishill

@OnePablo20 @bozzie_t Same here. Also a big bank. After a 4 month process and interviews with 9 people it broke down after I refused to give a breakdown of my salary.

Negotiations between me and a certain prominent SA bank fell apart when they insisted that their company policy requires a payslip upfront. I told them that it is not rational for a hiring decision to rely on my payslip when I don't even work there. Lucky for me I was not desperate for the job since I am already employed.

Days when prospective employers ask for your payslip during salary negotiations will soon be a thing of the past. Employers will be forced to declare the package range for a role being advertised and stop the nonsense of asking for payslips.
