Maybe you should watch the CCTV of the 9/11 hijackers waltzing through airport security run by rent-a-cop security outfits. Are you old enough to remember when there was no security to the gated areas? You could walk with your traveling friend or family member right up to the jet way door and hug them good-bye just before then got on the plane. Or you could wait at the door for arriving passengers -- all without any screening by anyone? Yeah -- it was a glaring security problem that needed to be addressed in a meaningful way without delay. Is today's TSA the best fix? Maybe not. But to second-guess the fix put in place in 2002 is just historically ignorant.
Jeff Deist@jeffdeist

To all of you fuming in airport lines today, your misery traces back to July 2002-- when the GOP led house voting overwhelmingly to create TSA as part of a new fedgov department known as "Homeland Security." This was sold by Dick Armey to a very willing George W Bush the same way the CIA was sold to Truman: as a "consolidation" of existing agencies, reports, channels, etc. Efficiency! And hey, if a few airport scanners need to be sold to this new department, so be it. So instead of owners- airlines- working with airports to secure air travel, we get the worst combination of inept and sinister: DMV/USPS meets Michael Chertoff. Ten Rs voted no. Chris Cannon (UT) John J. Duncan Jr. (TN) Jeff Flake (AZ) John Hostettler (IN) Jerry Moran (KS) Ron Paul (TX) Tom Petri (WI) Tom Tancredo (CO) Charles H. Taylor (NC) William M. Thomas (CA)

this outrage seems quite stupid and misguided systemd is not enforcing age verification, they are adding a possible optional and unverified way for distros to signal user age to apps this is a legal requirement in some jurisdictions now all distros whether they're running systemd or not will have to choose whether they're going to do some kind of bare minimum compliance with these laws or to simply explicitly prohibit their use in affected jurisdictions people seem to think systemd is giving ur ssn to palantir or something when it's pretty fucking obvious that the thing they're building in is the only privacy preserving way to comply with this garbage if you, as a distro or whatever. want to not commit crimes in these jurisdictions you will have to use shit like this, Devuan isn't going to be a legal alternative, it's just going to be crimes, or alternatively, if Linux as a whole took a hard step against this shit u would need to swap to windows or apple where they actually would just give ur ssn to palantir it's an awful situation for privacy, but the people complaining about systemd's implementation seem to be under the impression that laws just disappear if you decide to ignore them fight for a world where this isn't required, but in the mean time, this is your best bet. and like birthday? the userdb already contains far more sensitive information than this. this is a fuckin stupid hill to die on imo
nixCraft 🐧@nixcraft

systemd lost the plot a long time ago. they stopped following the Unix philosophy and now they're busy adding nonsense like age verification. Just like Firefox, systemd doesn't understand its core user base. There are plenty of distros without systemd

@ShamashAran it's kinda weird that so many people are obsessed with the color of other people's skin instead of the content of their character. if you're a fuckwit, you're a fuckwit. if you're an asshole, you're an asshole. if you're a good person, you're a good person. it's that simple.

I've said this tons of times. One day I hope my skin color is about as interesting to people as my eye or hair color.

@ShamashAran @MorlockP @RealDianeYap If there was a magic pill you could take that would make you white and nobody would know (and this is whatever version of white you think applies here) and then go live in a white ethnostate with absolutely no non-white people, would you consider that fulfillment of your wish?

@EricBurlison a right delayed is a right denied. current form1 times are >1 month even for citizens that have other NFA items. it's honestly pointless.

The NFA has been used for nearly a century to criminalize law-abiding gun owners. We already eliminated the $200 tax stamp. Now it's time to finish the job. My bill, H.R. 335, repeals the National Firearms Act entirely. Your rights aren't negotiable and they shouldn't come with a permission slip from the ATF.

@timburchett @realDonaldTrump It's not that they're gutless, it's that they're self-interested, and that our senators and representatives don't represent us. They represent special interests. It's not necessarily cowardice.... It's corruption.

@tuomosa The problem with BSD is that it’s much harder to find hardware for it. Linux versions run on a Raspberry Pi. Still hard to build a PC for Linux. I imagine much harder regarding driver support for BSD? Am I correct? Where can BSD run reliably?

Not just a grumpy unix greybeard here. I'm against #systemd (and similar mega-components like btrfs) because they destroy Unix composability: small, replaceable tools that lone hackers/small teams can actually fix, extend, or rewrite. Huge multi-million loc systems become anti-foss: too complex for individuals, owned & directed by whoever has the money & manpower. Capitalism fine, but anti-hacker centralization is not. #RUNBSD

@fromdevoid @DoingFedTime He's always been a fucking idiot. This is just the latest in a very, very long line of poor decisions that have wide-reaching consequences. Honestly, SystemD fucking sucks. And if there were literally any other option on modern binary Linux distros, I'd be using it.

Excellent work, Sam. What pisses me off the most is Poettering conflating Personal Data with the /home directory. This is how he tries to justify that it is ok for systemd to store DoB in a manner that is visible to any application that requests it, regardless of whether that application is actually engaged in an age verification process at that time or not. He never ceases to disappoint. Likewise, I find it extremely irritating how these people ignore the fact the OS is not being tasked with doing age verification, but only storing a data point. It would thus stand to reason that being this a sensitive data point, the PR feature should include audits of all accesses to that data point so an user could decide if they should take action against a product or company. Their ideological argument falls apart the moment the protection of the user is not being ensured.

Dylan, useful idiot with commit access, pushed age verification PRs to systemd, Ubuntu & Arch, got 2 Microslop employees to merge it, called it 'hilariously pointless' in the PR itself, then watched Lennart personally block the revert after community outrage. Unpaid compliance simp. Link below...
