@schadjoe @alexdelbarrio I mean, it’s a bunch of top level athletes competing for their country at a global event. It’s the same concept.

@oddezny @Jacobtheclipper They are routinely converted at 80-90% clip by these teams top penalty takers. They are basically gifted 0.8 goals

So if the ball is in the air you can just run into the foot of a player just winding up to kick it and you get a penalty?! This sport is a JOKE and why us Americans will never really care about it. We don’t reward stupid tactics like this ✌️

@RossBrian30643 @schadjoe What if a player gets injured in the meaningless third group games we have? What about a friendly? Also it’s an awful idea to lock an invitation. A team needs to play qualifying games to work out roster, approach, etc…

@internetguy87 @schadjoe The 3rd place game of any team sport, the consolation game you mean? The who gives a shit game? If FIFA were smart they would give the winner of that game an automatic invitation to the next. World Cup. Put some real stakes on it. Btw what if a player gets injured in that game?

@JamesSurowiecki On the flip side, do you really want refs and VAR making subjective calls do award PKs?

Given the way the rules are written, the ref had no real choice but to call a penalty. But this is a perfect example of how the cost of a penalty to the defending team is often vastly disproportionate to the benefit that team got by committing the penalty. Yamal doesn't play this ball - he lets it deflect off his arm. And he has no real possibility of turning into a good scoring chance from where he was. So Diane's interference cost Spain maybe 0.2 expected goals (if that). But the benefit to Spain of the penalty was 0.8 expected goals, That's an outsized benefit - which is why players look for penalties.

Another look at the Lucas Digne challenge on Lamine Yamal that resulted in a Spain penalty

@schadjoe Imagine if US lost vs Spain today, and had 3rd place vs England Saturday. It’d be an awesome event. The US team would absolutely be out there to win and celebrate it.

@AndyGlockner @CTRSteve There are countries where it’s dark for 16, 18, 20 hours a day a times if the year. They figure it out just fine.

@schadjoe @tworingsbaldy I think that’s the point. It’s a fun game to enjoy. Certain bench players, who may be future of the team, get a chance to play. It’s entertainment.

@schadjoe I agree they should scrap it But if they insist on keeping it, give the winner automatic entry into the next World Cup. Give each country something to play for Bronze medals aren’t worth it

@Nanorboyajian @schadjoe Why is that annoying? Is it any different than goals counting form the third group game where places were already decided?

@roque_coral @rip327 @SamMonsonNFL What does soccer talent at college level mean for this discussion. That’s less than 1% of adult male population. Maybe you hit 1% if you include high school.

@rip327 @SamMonsonNFL Well that’s what I mean. I’m saying that the overall percentage may be higher than we think when you consider that men with college soccer experience could score. I think even some older youth players that compete at the higher youth levels could score too tbh.

According to YouGov, 32% of American men think they could score a World Cup penalty. I'm honestly not entirely sure if 32% of American men could hit the goal without a keeper between the posts. The number that could beat a professional keeper is low single digits.

@shemsifcb I’m confused. Argentina eliminated them last time. Why does it matter what round it was in?

@dabaof2 @SportsTaxMan Yes I understand that but half their games are where their team is based. Not sure how they tax days off, practices. So at least half would have the high tax state and local tax.

France and Spain are playing at 3 pm on a Tuesday. Why must we cater the World Cup schedule to the nations playing in the games? Is the Open going to tee off later in the day so Americans can watch at a good time? How about Wimbledon? I don't think so.

Germany most certainly not. Broken hearts and frustrations do not equate to an upset. Germany had the same questions coming in as going out. No leadership, no depth. Losing to a team parking the bus and on PKs. There have been no upsets this tournament and that’s something in 32-years of watching World Cups.

Just clocked this… If Spain, France, Argentina and England all make the Semis, we’d have a World Cup SF lineup comprising of the 4 highest ranked nations in footballl. When was the last time that happened?

Of the 26 knockout matches played so far at this WC, pre-match favorites won in 22. Wins of "underdogs": 🇵🇾 PAR def. 🇩🇪 GER 🇲🇦 MAR def. 🇳🇱 NED 🇳🇴 NOR def. 🇧🇷 BRA 🇨🇭 SUI def. 🇨🇴 COL Some of those hardly constitute a genuine surprise. The only match where the winning side had <30% pre-game chance of qualifying was 🇵🇾 Paraguay v 🇩🇪 Germany.
