Market makers generally have a huge edge, but every once in a while they slip up and the human traders who keep their eyes peeled can scoop some very high expected value bets.
Yesterday, Hynix depository receipts in Germany dropped 15% inexplicably while the DRAM and $EWY ETFs were unchanged. The price made little sense, either the ETFs should've been much lower, or the receipts were not properly priced. In a matter of 15 minutes, tens of Millions in volume exchanged hands at a massive discount to where it should've been trading.
Anyone who spotted it was able to make a very positive expected value bet by purchasing shares and hedging them against DRAM. I was able to make 20,000 Euros (roughly $23,000) on 150 shares myself, and subscribers cleared upwards of 210,000 Euros.
This happens maybe once a year. The market makers are extremely sharp, but it's nice to know the human traders can win every now and then.
