Small modular reactors could complement Irelands wind energy system beautifully.

Has the Rivian R2 been delayed again? Nothing expected until 2027 now. I do worry that what looked cool in 2025 is going to be a bit dated in 2027.

@every_station The Irish mile was significantly longer than the standard English (statute) mile. While a statute mile is 1,760yards (1.609 km), an Irish mile was defined as 2,240yards (approximately 2.048km or 1.27statute miles).

Sixmilebridge ✅ I’m told by a good friend it’s 6 Irish miles from here to Limerick… didn’t even know miles in Britain was different to miles in Ireland 🤷‍♂️ Little look around the village before a coach move to Ennis!

@irlguide @thejournal_ie @Toibin1 They why didn't any other party do that and win? No, its a groundswell of people who can see the great work Peadar has done for farmers, for families, for all the voices that aren't listened to by any other party. It'll be a shock to you just like family and care referendums.

@paulmurphy_TD Paul it is credible that both sources of power can be utilised. In order for plug in solar to reduce fuel poverty it must be done to heavily favour those who cannot afford these things normally

The latest FF/FF idea: Nuclear power for data centres. They won't even give households plug in solar, but the data centres will get nuclear power stations. They represent Big Tech, not the rest of us.

@AontuL Yes mad isn’t it. Who would have guessed that a few posts here on X directing Aontu people to vote could have had such an outcome ;-)

Ah but what about SMR’s?. These are small modular reactors between one half to one quarter the size of a reactor like Hinkley. Again, on the airways you will hear Ireland needs SMR’s. The public commentators don’t seem to know that SMR’s are not available commercially and only+

@PeterSmartpower You haven’t mentioned that the Chinese are experimenting with them. If they can factory build and deploy them to sites already grid connected they may be a solution. They are apparently able to load follow downwards so would be suited to coexist with with renewables.

commercial reactors. The most advanced U.S. SMR project, NuScale’s Carbon Free Power Project in Idaho, was cancelled in 2023 after projected costs rose far above renewables and storage. SMR designs remain on paper or prototype only with similar issues to conventional nuclear +

at least one half of French nuclear reactors were off-line with safety issues and facing an estimated €50billion bill for mandatory safety upgrades. The most recent nuclear build in Europe – the Finnish Olkiluoto plant opened 12 years late (taking 20+yrs from start to finish) +

The case for Nuclear in Ireland - I am starting this thread here because there are so many people calling for it now with no idea of what they are talking about. The cost & construction time for nuclear plants is so onerous, the companies involved usually go bust along the way +
