Lessons from Museum Ingabo; support, growth and responsibility. The situation surrounding Museum Ingabo and the City of Kigali shows how difficult it can be to balance support for creative initiatives with the realities of sustainability and business responsibility. In many ways, it is hard to expect socialism and capitalism to work together without clear limits and expectations from both sides. After reading both statements from King Ngabo ( @kingabo_) and the City of Kigali ( @CityofKigali ), one thing is clear; the museum Ingabo at Agaseke Centre received significant support from the city in its early stages. From August 2023 to December 2024, the space was provided free of charge. That alone was a major contribution because it meant the City of Kigali was indirectly covering part of the operational burden tied to the facility, including maintenance, security, utilities, and management of the public space. For a young initiative, that kind of support is not something small and it deserves recognition. There is need to understand that, art and cultural spaces across the world are usually protected because they preserve history, identity, education, and culture. Museums are not just businesses; they are learning spaces and cultural assets for future generations. This is why many people feel emotional seeing such a place facing closure. However, another reality also has to be acknowledged, once an initiative starts generating income through visitors, donations, events, or partnerships, questions about accountability and sustainability naturally come in. It becomes difficult to continue expecting public institutions to fully carry operational costs when the project itself has started operating as a business activity. There are also legitimate questions that people need to know. What exactly was agreed upon in the MoU between the museum Ingabo and the City of Kigali? Once the museum started generating revenue, were financial reports or books of accounts shared with the city? And if the institution was struggling financially, why agree to a rental arrangement that would later become difficult to maintain? Beyond the current disagreement, there are important lessons to take from this situation. First, young creative initiatives need support, and the City of Kigali deserves credit for giving the museum an opportunity to grow. Second, many young entrepreneurs and artists need stronger support in business management, financial planning, and sustainability. Creativity alone is not always enough to keep an institution running long term. Most importantly, the government entity in charge of arts, creativity and culture should step in and help facilitate dialogue between both sides. We should not lose spaces that contribute to cultural preservation and learning. Our children and future generations need places where they can connect with history, creativity, and identity. Instead of allowing this situation to end in closure, it should become an opportunity to find sustainable solutions while also learning more about the real challenges artists and creative spaces face every day. 🖼️credit from @MuseumIngabo and @CityofKigali "X" platform
