@denialvibes @janusvh2 I highly recommend you watch this (I have no affiliation with the channel, this is just a very thorough video about what charging options are available) youtu.be/is7I0wFwzxs

@hjwakerley MG5 (EV) if he can charge at home, because there's less to go wrong than an ICE car and they're really cheap to run (if you can charge at home). I know it's not a manual, but honestly an EV drives like a manual that's always in the correct gear rather than like an automatic.

Serious question. My old dad has driven this A6 Avant for a decade. What would you buy him next? £8000 max budget Manual Reliable A good sized boot (If anyone wants this it’s got great service history but no working infotainment)

The claim that climate change is “real but not existential” is a distraction. No serious scientist argues human extinction is the risk. The risk is systemic damage that compounds — and it’s already visible at ~1.3°C of warming. Measured reality, not panic: • Extreme heat events that were once 1-in-100 years now happen roughly every decade. • Sea level rise is accelerating — satellite data shows the rate has more than doubled since the 1990s. • Heat is already reducing crop yields; this is observed, not modelled. Calling that a “moderate inconvenience” is fantasy economics. Permanent losses of even 1–2% of GDP per year compound into trillions and lock in instability — especially for poorer regions. The “renewables made no difference” line collapses under basic facts: • Wind & solar are now the cheapest new electricity in most countries. • Fossil use rose because global energy demand exploded, not because clean energy failed. • Where renewables scaled fastest, power-sector emissions fell fastest. Even Elon Musk — hardly a climate activist — is blunt: solar + storage will dominate because it’s cheaper, scalable, and inevitable. That’s physics and economics, not ideology. Yes, activists exaggerated timelines. That doesn’t repeal thermodynamics. We don’t deny heart disease because someone once overstated the risk. Climate change isn’t the apocalypse. It is a risk multiplier for food, water, health, migration and conflict — and dismissing that as “panic” isn’t realism, it’s complacency. Sanity isn’t declaring victory. Sanity is acting before costs compound beyond easy repair. We both have kids; even the Mail accepts there is Climate Change - why wouldn’t we make it better if we could and even more so, if we could create a compelling U.K. economic advantage by doing so. As ever, I remain open to meeting and discussing all things battery and auto (since I’m not qualified to talk about anything else).

@McguigganPeter @LyndonRosser @MDC12345678 And yet Denmark, Sweden and Portugal have both cheaper electricity and more wind power than UK, so the price is high in UK for some other reason (hint, it's how electricity prices are mostly set by gas)

@gavmarten @autocar Ethiopia has already banned import of new and second hand ICE cars. Norway to follow shortly if they haven't already.

@AlexEdgerton I've only had something like "range anxiety" when I drove a diesel because if you run out of fuel in a diesel it can mess up the engine because of sediment in the bottom of the tank. I don't plan charging stops in an EV - just leave the car navigation to show charger locations

When I was daily driving a gas car, I often found myself on the freeway, scanning the horizon for gas stations because the needle is on E. Does this exit have a station? Maybe I’ll take the next one. What if the next one doesn’t? Range anxiety is way worse with ICE. Now I don’t worry about this at all. I never leave with less than 80%, and at most use half of it. On a rare big trip, all my stops are planned in advance for me. I know exactly when and where I’m going to stop. It’s just an easier way to live.

@ivanrmoore @michaelwood92 @ListerLawrence I guess some people are just built differently. I know this conversation is about Europe but 4.5 hrs seems like nothing, here in the USA heavy trucks are regulated to a 30 min break every 8 hours (14 hr max shift a day) and thats about as much as I'd want to drive without a break

Another 430 miles range in 3 minutes for just £126 at a motorway services. Honestly, this is something EV owners can only dream of.

@AntiEVidiots @Mrtnvrbst @tommuk00 @ListerLawrence EV’s are definitely no use for long journeys, imagine take one up the top end of Scotland where there is next to no charging, I went to Invergarry last week and didn’t see a single charger once I got off the m8, what do you do then ??

@RealBriansDad @michaelwood92 @ListerLawrence HGV rules are 45 min stop after 4.5 hrs and I think most car drivers should probably stop more often than that. Certainly I find I want to stop more often than my EV needs to stop.

@GrumpyUK @ListerLawrence I live 220 mile from my aging parents All my vehicle can easily crack 400mile @ a sustained 85mph+ Should I get 'that call' last thing I want is knowing my dad's breathing his last breath whilst I'm stuck in a car park willing the charge up Now an EV as a shopping trolley👍🏻

@GrumpyUK @ListerLawrence Some EVs could do that without stopping. A standard range Tesla model 3 would need one charge of about 15 mins to be sure to do that (which would add about 100 miles; a bit more than you need but assuming you don't want to arrive empty) See: outofspecstudios.com/10-challenge

@ListerLawrence I’m not anti EV but I’d need it to go from NW to SE (305 mls) without delay or anxiety. Of course your Bentley is at the extreme (I do have a Cayenne 4.5S but too costly for trip) but how much would an equivalent EV take to do a six hour journey to allow charge time en route?

@RealBriansDad @michaelwood92 @ListerLawrence 70 mph for 6 hours in UK? Too much traffic, too many road works, too many speed restrictions. To give an idea of scale, 430 miles is Exeter to Hamilton (near Glasgow).

@tommuk00 @ListerLawrence Electric is going up Tom and soon you won’t be seeing any difference between costs. Ev’s are good ( at the minute ) for daily commutes, as soon as you want to go long distance you are screwed, which I found out wnd reverted back to diesel

I live in Wales and today received my Join Us letter from Reform UK, complete with SAE which I posted back to them, immediately, empty. If every other person in Wales did this, Reform would spend over £1.5 million on postage. Not sorry. Join me Cymru.

@jollygandt @paullewismoney The early thermally managed EVs seem to be lasting very well and battery scientists reckon LFP batteries will last even longer. youtu.be/2HlyQy9WRlc For servicing - it's quite the opposite of what your garage says. EVs need minimal servicing - which is a problem for garages.

@jollygandt @paullewismoney I've had no problem finding chargers in Northern Europe, but I think there are some parts of Europe that are a long way behind. I find I want to stop every 200 miles or so anyway. That's typically at least 3-4 hours. I almost always want to stop more than the car needs to.

Plug-in hybrids which can run electric or petrol/diesel will be taxed twice for the fuel miles bit.ly/48gHgG0 The half rate 1.5/mile EV tax will apply to all miles and they will pay full fuel duty on the petrol/diesel used for fuel miles.

@Geoff85689912 @paullewismoney There are many PHEVs with more electric range than the national average daily driving range (about 21 miles) and many whose speed is limited to something higher than 70mph.

@ivanrmoore @paullewismoney Wow that’ll create a nightmare piece of administration. No doubt be there’ll a few who are happy to tootle around on the PHEV’s very limited speed and mileage. But that makes for a very expensive way to get around.
