@tolstoybb the amount of food content on instagram is truly demented. hundreds of food and restaurant content creators all posting the same stuff. it could all easily be replaced with 100% AI generated media and few would notice, probably why IG and TikTok love it so much.

@simonsarris writing code isn't the biggest bottleneck for many orgs, it's everything else. many corporations could figure out how to go must faster without AI. I suspect many corporations don't actually want to go significantly faster. frederickvanbrabant.com/blog/2026-05-1…

What are the odds a kind of corporate AI usage crash is coming about 6 months from now? Maybe goes like: 1. Definitive enough "spend > revenue increase" from letting all employees run wild with token usage 2. Picking up the pieces of nightmares created as (middling) employees used zillions of tokens 3. Lock down of who is allowed to use the tooling

Am I wrong to think that the original macOS control panel was not well designed? I don’t think it was easy to understand. I appreciate it was bold: it avoided words. But words are good for understanding. Someone sell it to me.
Héliographe@heliographe_

There's something so timeless and iconic about the design of Control Panel in System 1 But of course it doesn't scale well when having to add text + new elements as we see in System 3... hence the split design from System 5 And then there's the multi window madness of System 7

“Sleepwalkers” is rather dubious, and Schama’s “Citizens” hasn’t aged especially well.

@Waldo5011 it’s nice to take breaks from this subject but I come back to it regularly. I read all of these books pretty slowly. I picked this up recently.

@j_ckley I'm working myself up mentally to read Framing the Early Middle Ages. That book definitely does NOT seem like pop history and seems like a beast to tackle

@BillTheKid1603 seems like a work that is broadly respected across the field despite disagreements and critiques, no?

@Waldo5011 yeah obviously I took a more expansive view of what “popular history” means :) The Inheritance of Rome is excellent, just wanted more people to know about Wickham’s work!

@j_ckley I've read Wickham's Medieval Europe and Inheritance of Rome and they are more for a wider audience but idk if they would be considered pop history. They're written by an expert in the field and well-researched

I don’t really get the hate for Citizens. it’s a well-researched and comprehensive overview of the lead-up to, and main period of, the French Revolution. Schama isn’t in love with the Revolution. you can find merit in things you don’t necessarily agree with!
