Public reporting and statements in the Legislature have raised questions about an alleged “Golden Cat.” If it exists: 1. Was it a personal gift, or received on behalf of the Office of the Premier of Alberta? 2. If it entered Canada, how was it declared at customs, were duties or exemptions applied, and under what authority? 3. If it was a personal benefit, was it appropriately disclosed to CRA, and were any applicable taxes paid, as required by law? Alberta Premiers earn ~$190K/year (higher with pension and benefits). Gifts of significant value can carry tax and reporting obligations depending on how they are received. I don’t know… If I had to pay ~46–48% in income tax on a high-value gift, I wouldn’t want a “tacky golden cat” even at a 52–54% discount, unless it was accepted on behalf of Alberta, in which case it belongs in the provincial archives. Premier @ABDanielleSmith, if it exists, who has custody of the cat, and on whose behalf is it held? Border agents, lawyers, accountants: thoughts? P.S.
