Walking down the street to Berkley Square last night I note there is showroom for the Chinese car giant BYD and dominating their windows is a sign saying Motorbility. Why on earth are we encouraging our taxpayer-funded benefit claimants to buy a car made by our Communist enemies? If the car isn’t made here, employing our workers and our skills, we should not allow them on the Motorbility scheme.

For murder: the spike was unusual against the recent trend. She was present at an unusually large number of the collapses. The babies did collapse suddenly. The collapses seemed to correspond to her shifts and went away when she was removed from the ward. I don’t think any of these are wildly probative, but they are at least there — all other things being equal, they increase the posterior likelihood. It is not as though there is an overwhelming torrent of evidence tending to exonerate Ms. Letby: it is more that the evidence you would normally expect that might convict her is missing. In any case, in my view, it got nowhere near the standard of proof, and the conviction was assisted by some errors of direction (as to method) and admission of evidence (Dr. Evans in particular). In any case, it is not (as some claim) anything like certain Ms. Letby is innocent. But nor does it need to be for this to be an outrageous miscarriage of justice.

The Letby debate has become so tribal and politicised in that neither side seems able to recognise any flaws or shortcomings in its own positions, however preposterous, and is reduced to rebarbative Sir Humphrey Applebyisms, only with swearing.

Can a university somewhere calculate the total value of freebies if you live in social housing in Zones 1/2? Eg. in effect no rent, energy bills subsidised, ‘social tariffs’ for water, no council tax, 50% off tube, limitless NHS healthcare. It’s a very expensive package.

@ContrarianJolly Well, you say that. What, specifically are the strengths of the guilty case? I am not talking about legal process but whether or not we are sure that she killed the babies.

If it the innocence case was that obvious, Ms. Letby would not be in jail. If her convictions were straightforward, dozens of experts would not be objecting. It is complicated. There are points on either side. You are more credible, and resilient, if you acknowledge that.

Attempts are being made as predicted, to distract, cow & silence me. I have taken prophylactic measures but will not be commenting for time being as whatever I may say will be grist to his mill and whatever variety of hot pepper sauce he may have in mind for me. Fun, fun, fun!

Update on enforcement of costs in Hayden v Heath @LegalGengar. I have now had a response to my letter to Hayden. The response started with the words “Please find attached (in PDF) correspondence of even date, which even you should be capable of understanding in terms absolute.”/1

@CharlesTerf Maybe he is pursuing a strategy to avoid bankruptcy by raising meritless issues. Or perhaps he is depleting his assets on bogus legal advice.

The next step will be to present a bankruptcy petition to the court. A Trustee in Bankruptcy can then investigate the affairs of Hayden. Hayden’s application to set aside the demand or defend the petition will both fail. The effect of bankruptcy will be far reaching. /5

I completely understand the frustration of British cities no longer looking “English” but can I ask why English businesses have stopped trading in these same places they complain about. I hardly see independent English/white owned fruit and vege, corner shops, butchers, restaurants etc WHY?? There are plenty of empty buildings up and down the high street- so why can’t you English pull your finger out? Can’t be bothered? Poor work ethic? If there is an empty building and no one is taking out a lease or buying it who’s English, what’s wrong with Asian, Middle Eastern businesses setting up shop It just sounds like jealousy at times. Nothing is stopping you from opening a business on a high street of your choice.

I have been in a state of non-clinical depression since yesterday evening as the result of Arsenal having lost the Carabao Cup final. I have now resolved it. "It was only the Carabao Cup". There. Sorted.

Regrettably for Zarah, a bunch of the institutional investors who are key shareholders in Greggs are also major investors in arms companies which provide key weapons systems to Israel (which was the tenuous 'argument' made against Bain Capital re: Gails). Enjoy your veggie bake!

Don't take it from me that the top-tier commercial tech nerds are idiots savants. Bachelor-level maths with the political understanding and general wisdom of the average 14-year-old. Commercial culture elevates idiots to positions of influence and power. Scary times.
David Senra@davidsenra

Great men of history had little to no introspection. The personality that builds empires is not the same personality that sits around quietly questioning itself. @pmarca and I discuss what we both noticed but no one talks about: David: You don't have any levels of introspection? Marc: Yes, zero. As little as possible. David: Why? Marc: Move forward. Go! I found people who dwell in the past get stuck in the past. It's a real problem and it's a problem at work and it's a problem at home. David: So I've read 400 biographies of history’s greatest entrepreneurs and someone asked me what the most surprising thing I’ve learned from this was [and I answered] they have little or zero introspection. Sam Walton didn't wake up thinking about his internal self. He just woke up and was like: I like building Walmart. I'm going to keep building Walmart. I'm going to make more Walmarts. And he just kept doing it over and over again. Marc: If you go back 400 years ago it never would've occurred to anybody to be introspective. All of the modern conceptions around introspection and therapy, and all the things that kind of result from that are, a kind of a manufacture of the 1910s, 1920s. Great men of history didn't sit around doing this stuff. The individual runs and does all these things and builds things and builds empires and builds companies and builds technology. And then this kind of this kind of guilt based whammy kind of showed up from Europe. A lot of it from Vienna in 1910, 1920s, Freud and all that entire movement. And kind of turned all that inward and basically said, okay, now we need to basically second guess the individual. We need to criticize the individual. The individual needs to self criticize. The individual needs to feel guilt, needs to look backwards, needs to dwell in the past. It never resonated with me.

.@rstrongdoctor. Not really. That was a slogan adopted by Labour in 1964 , claiming that comprehensives would provide a grammar school education for all. The proponents of comps always knew they would lower standards, but did not care because they were intended as an engine of egalitarianism.
Radfoot Strongdoctor@RStrongdoctor

Comprehensive education promised to make excellence available to everyone. Instead it succeeded by making excellence optional for everyone. The grammar school sent working class children to Oxford while the comprehensive system sent them to a university that used to be a polytechnic with a degree that used to be an HND. That is not equality, rather it is the democratisation of disappointment.

@ajwillshire What do you mean by a national disaster? What evidence do you have that it exists? How do you know that it was caused by those people?

As a kid, I remember the likes of Michael White, Jeremy Bowen, John Simpson, et al, as a near-constant presence on BBC news. Their role in shaping the discourse can hardly be underestimated. And that drip-drip-drip of personal bias and moral cowardice into the national bloodstream been an absolute disaster.
