The letter my wife and I wrote for our son Caden on his graduation, for his yearbook: Caden, The best thing we have done in our lives besides trusting in Christ and marrying one another, is having children. You were such a wonderful gift from the Lord that we had three more. And we are especially proud of the man you have become. God has given you great natural talents, more so than us; gifts that the world especially values. Many will come and tempt you to use these talents for their glory while pretending you are working for your own: both are evil. God has gifted you, not for you, but for Him, with others second. You are third. If you live in third, you will flourish, and so will your loved ones; if you don’t, you won’t and neither will they (unless they follow another Christian living in third). As you live in third place, work faithfully. It is not the exceptionally talented who succeed in life but those who maximize the gifts the Lord has given them. Weak men make big talent small. Your gifts will either increase and mature or diminish and perish. “Wasted talent” has been written on the tombstones of men more gifted than you. Labor soberly so your loved ones inscribe Scripture on yours. As you work, remember God is the “why” and Christ is the “reason.” Worship God always. Conquer the world by the Spirit with the gospel and the ethics of Christ. Paul did, while often chained in prison. Share his ambition. Paul succeeded because he was content in Christ, come what may from God’s sovereign hand. Pursue Christ as you conquer, and you will remain content in Him. Whether in pain or prosperity, it does not matter, for Christ is Lord of matter, and He is in you. Finally, remember where you came from, and return often. We have given you Christ, His ethics, discipline, and example, as our parents did to us. Pass Christ and His morals on to others, mature them in your wife, and give Christ to our grandbabies. Tennessee hillbillies made us who we are and now has made you. These people are our heritage. Stand on their/our shoulders. Be a frontiersman for life. Be strong in the Lord. Love always, Mom and Dad
