Existing collaboration with Golshani Lab @pgolshani, @arashbe! "Crystallization" of volatile working memory representations with practice using Light Beads Microscopy by imaging >73,000 M2 neurons across cortical layers. Congratulations to the entire team! shorturl.at/PXmYC

"People use UMAPs because they are good at visualizing what they want to show" captures the problem with using UMAP perfectly.
Anshul Kundaje@anshulkundaje

@NimwegenLab @mbeisen People at not stupid. They use UMAPs because they are infact very good at visualizing what they want to show.

Abstract disentangled low D representations are great for generalization but are not efficient for memory storage. The hippocampus seems to increase dimensionality to fix this problem. Published in Neuron, with a wonderful team @LaraBintheBrain, @LorenzoPosani, S. Siegelbaum

Out today in Neuron 🥳 doi.org/10.1016/j.neur… ⚖️ Is there a computational trade-off between memory and abstraction? 📐 How does the geometry of the neural code control this trade-off? 🧠 What are its implications on social memory and familiarity? Check out the paper and 🧵👇

1/6 Sadly I missed @SfNtweets due to visa :( I missed my talk at nanosymposium "computational models of decision-making" (by @daeyeol_lee) and also lost my Trainee Professional Development Award (2.5k$). So, let me use Twitter to do a portion of what I could do at SfN in a 🧵

Possibly unpopular opinion: most science grad programs aren't set up to train students for non-academic paths. We should have more training programs for students who are interested in science but ultimately don't want to become scientists (in the sense of running their own labs).
