@ChefGruel Early, yes I agree. We feed cattle in Iowa. Purchase at 900-950 lbs. Feed them for 7+ months until finished (+/- 1600 lbs). The ration is corn, corn silage, ground cornstalk bales, DDGS (Distiller’s dried grains with solubles), and a mineral supplement. 65% of life on grass.

And an update on my point about grass-fed. Most beef in the early stage of their lives are fed grass (some say 90% some say 70-90%). It's the final stage that some remain on grass and some switch to more grain.

Soybean SDS is getting out of hand in SW Iowa. Fields that looked good a week ago look like this today.

@aghedger We were forecasted to get 2” early last week. We got 1/10th. We continue to see rain in the forecast but usually get nothing. And now 3 days of 99+. They forecasted that accurately.

Might need to start selling some grain….

@efarmsfive @hayseedmike Correct. Early termination has been key for us. Worked out really well this year but of course, there is always risk. Good rain here this year and almost no erosion.

@hayseedmike Needs terminated very early especially in stubble in my opinion. I didn’t get that done the way I wanted. Just not worth the loss.

Cover crop experimentation on this farm is done. No bueno. 👎
