I'll never read even a tiny fraction of the world's great novels or poetry and yet here I sit stressed about closing an unread browser tab.

@sea_ngel I was also perplexed by this. Evidently it's from the "black national anthem". Seems they are tying into Black History Month that started today.

When did the word LIFT become the first word of our National Anthem?

@Apple what the heck is this clue from your Erik Agard crossword? Since when is the first word of the US National Anthem “Lift”? Cut the garbage.

@jmrivera02 Just happened to read your 2021 review of Spider-Man: No Way Home for Polygon. Perhaps I'm biased because I liked the movie for the same reasons it seems you did, but I thought it was beautifully written.

@drbarnard @RevenueCat Interesting. Just got the annual default but switched to monthly (I subscribe to like 3 other weather apps so I'm a little hesitant)

One other interesting tidbit from the launch so far… since my @RevenueCat colleagues made it so damn easy, I’m running my first ever A/B test! (I’m using the RevenueCat Paywalls footer view to handle purchases, so it took me like 5 minutes to set up the test.) I wanted to generate some monthly recurring revenue instead of just pushing everyone to annual which would create a spike of revenue from the launch, but then potentially lead to a dry spell if the app loses momentum. So, I’m split testing the monthly plan as the default option vs the annual plan as the default option. As of today, we hit statistical significance with the results. Having the Monthly set as the default drove an 8% increase in initial conversion (combination of trial starts and direct purchases for those ineligible for a trial). What we won’t know until next week is whether or not that translates into a similar increase in trial conversion. And then, of course, it’ll take months to get a sense for whether the higher expected churn of the monthly subscriptions more than offsets the increase in conversions. 210 people who got the monthly plan as the default switched to the annual. Only 50 people who saw the annual plan as the default switched to the monthly.

We removed the lifetime purchase option from Weather Up 3, but the SKU still exists on the App Store (in case we ever do decide to bring it back). I raised the price to $159.99 to make it seem like a bad deal, but I’ve now had 3 people ask where they can find it in the app. 🤔

Using the new widget interactivity features in iOS 17, we packed a whole weather app… onto your Home Screen! So excited to finally launch this update to @Weather_Up_. @bbatsell and I (as well as a bunch of great collaborators including @matthewskiles and @flarup) have been working on this update off and on for 4+ years. And I’m so proud of what we accomplished. [Link in the next tweet. Because… algorithms.]

@mattyglesias I thought you literally meant X (i.e. Twitter) at first and I was so confused.

A good hypothesis to explore for "why is X getting coverage even though I don't think it's important" is often "it's popular with readers."

@rdstoll @talmonsmith Savings have been elevated across all income brackets since all the free money that went out during the pandemic. Still a fair amount of that excess savings out there.

@talmonsmith This is utter BS. No "average" consumer sits on that much money in their accounts without spending it. Majority spend 100% of what they make. Would consumer sentiment be this bad if everyone had this much $$ stuffed in their bank account?

BofA CEO: "the cohort of consumers that had between 2 and $5k in their account prepandemic, average of about $3,200/3,400, they're now still sitting with about 13k in their account...it has come down from a peak of $13.4k to about $12.8k but still much higher than it was before."

@ChewyYorkie @talmonsmith Assuming they fall into the <$50k income bracket, they likely have about 140% of what they had before (so if you had $1,000 you’d now have $1,400)

@talmonsmith Lol okay so what about those who had less than $2k in their account pre pandemic? What was their avg/median account balance pre-pandemic and their avg/median balance today?

I understand getting this prompt when I edit a recurring event, or when I delete an occurrence that’s already on my calendar. I just don’t see how it makes sense when accepting an invite. Also, if I accept just one occurrence, where would I go later to accept future occurrences?

@flexibits I’ve started to get prompts about accepting all or one occurrence of an event. I don’t understand why I’m being asked this question, and especially why the default is to accept just one. Whether an event recurs is a question for the event creator, not the receiver.

I’ve still got the Twitter app on my Mac but I’ve deleted it from my phone and iPad. I’ve switched to Threads for all my interest-based, text-first social networking needs.

One knock against X/Twitter that's incredibly specific to me is that the like button is in the middle of the screen and also not available in the context menu. My phone has a touchscreen dead zone running straight down the middle of the screen so liking tweets is a total pain.
