To my non-Iranian friends: This is Amirhossein Hatami. He was executed this morning in Iran. A teenager, born in 2007, killed simply for daring to take to the streets on Jan 8th and 9th.
Unbelievable, right? You might even wonder why the Iranian regime would do this while simultaneously facing military strikes from Israel and the US.
The answer is they know all too well that the Iranian people despise them. They know when the people get the chance, potentially enabled by these very strikes, the regime will be finished.
You might ask, why don't they try to be kinder to prevent an uprising? Because they are way past that point. There is a sea of blood between the people and this regime. Their only option is to try to frighten and suppress the public, like a wounded, cornered beast. They have arrested tens of thousands since January, and heinous crimes are happening to them behind closed doors, including murder, right at this moment.
For many of you privileged to live in democratic countries, this must be unimaginable. You might think a government is something you can simply vote away, or pressure through social media, protests, or sit-ins. And if none of that works, you accept it, return to daily life, and complain to a colleague as elevator small talk.
Here lies the profound difference: we are not dealing with a government that merely hurts people through bad policies or crushes free speech. We are facing a regime coming directly for our lives.
You may never truly understand what that feels like, and that is totally fine. The innocence in your hearts and the inability to imagine how bad things can get is something I wish Iranians had, too. I don't blame you; I wish safety was the default for everyone.
But it is not. Due to our vastly different lived experiences, you cannot understand exactly how we feel. Please accept that, and remember it next time you feel tempted to lecture us on why our choices are wrong or why "wars are bad."
Wars ARE bad. But sometimes necessary when dealing with a heavily armed regime determined to stay in power, which has proven there is no limit to the number of people it will kill to do so. This war between Iranians and the regime started long ago. What changed this past month is that the US and Israel are now hitting the regime, our common enemy.
Are you triggered by seeing photos of crushed buildings and smoke after bombings? Yes, that is scary. But do you know what is even scarier? Seeing piles of bodies, people killed with a bullet to the head, tens of thousands of them. Exactly what happened on Jan 8th and 9th.
So, if news of this specific type of war involving bombs is too tense for you, feel free to look away. But accept that you have not been through what we have.
Among our options forward, there is no path without death for innocent people. So it comes down to choosing the one with fewer casualties, that is the one where this regime is crushed by a military force stronger than itself.
