@JakeGallagher93 @boztank @DavidSacks Ha, no that is not at all what anyone recognizing the corruption here is saying. David Sacks is not an AI expert, he is a venture capitalist & right wing propagandist. Like almost everyone in the Cabinet, he is totally unqualified for his role, and is using it for personal gain.

@jmandell @boztank @DavidSacks Can you name a better option without asking ChatGPT? So if I am understanding you correctly, the potential candidate can’t have any political preference (right or left) or any sort of private business in order to be an adviser?

I don't know @DavidSacks. But I want more expertise in government. Experts tend to - have made money in their area of expertise - have friends in their area of expertise If people can't have history or friends in a field before leading it then our "leaders" won't know anything!

@jmandell @boztank @DavidSacks Exactly, or don't want to have that conversation? I think it's a valuable conversation to have: what does conflict of interest look like in a highly complex internet world? But instead, people keep labeling it a hit piece instead of grappling with a deeper discussion.

@JakeGallagher93 @boztank @DavidSacks If they wanted a true AI expert there are tons of better options. Sacks has been a right wing propagandist buttering up Trump for years. There’s tons of things he could do if he didn’t want to be corrupted. Start with not trying to promote and generate revenue for his podcast.

Jason, please propose an alternative option that can’t be misconstrued as “corruption”. I’m not saying it’s a perfect structure, but Sacks is mitigating conflicts of interest within reason and has demonstrated a history of expertise in the both arenas. The alternatives as I see it are 1) We have no one advising the WH on AI or Crypto to avoid any potential accusations of corruption or 2) We have someone with NO personal ties or network within the industry (aka no real world experience) which seems to be completely counterproductive to the effort as a whole.

@danprimack Come on Dan, the rampant inside dealing, conflicts of interest, & preferential treatment are likely at unprecedented levels here. In the age of Trump it may feel harmless, but let’s pretend any previous President appointed someone who maintained these levels of private interests.

As I tweeted earlier, the NYT story was mostly a nothingburger. At least for those familiar with the situation. As for "hoax": The story itself, as published, isn't being disputed. Obviously the NYT had info/questions that Sacks/lawyers answered, and disproven info wasn't included. That's how journalism works. The real complaint seems to be about the headline: "Silicon Valley’s Man in the White House Is Benefiting Himself and His Friends" I get the complaint. But it's really a matter of interpretation. Not true/false/hoax. Sacks and Trump WH are pursuing a "let them cook" AI policy that they believe will help us "win" the AI race, and that the rewards outweigh the risks. Others disagree (thus the preemption fight). Only time will tell if Sacks is correct. What we know for sure, though, is that his deregulatory policies should help VC funds (his, those run by friends, those run by strangers, etc.). Thus the headline is defensible, albeit pushing an agenda.
David Sacks@DavidSacks

INSIDE NYT’S HOAX FACTORY Five months ago, five New York Times reporters were dispatched to create a story about my supposed conflicts of interest working as the White House AI & Crypto Czar. Through a series of “fact checks” they revealed their accusations, which we debunked in detail. (Not surprisingly the published article included only bits and pieces of our responses.) Their accusations ranged from a fabricated dinner with a leading tech CEO, to nonexistent promises of access to the President, to baseless claims of influencing defense contracts. Every time we would prove an accusation false, NYT pivoted to the next allegation. This is why the story has dragged on for five months. Today they evidently just threw up their hands and published this nothing burger. Anyone who reads the story carefully can see that they strung together a bunch of anecdotes that don’t support the headline. And of course, that was the whole point. At no point in their constant goalpost-shifting was NYT willing to update the premise of their story to accept that I have no conflicts of interest to uncover. As it became clear that NYT wasn’t interested in writing a fair story, I hired the law firm Clare Locke, which specializes in defamation law. I’m attaching Clare Locke’s letter to NYT so readers have full context on our interactions with NYT’s reporters over the past several months. Once you read the letter, it becomes very clear how NYT willfully mischaracterized or ignored the facts to support their bogus narrative.

I disagree with David on some political issues. So far as I can tell, though, he has gone out of his way to divest himself of investments that would create conflicts of interest with his role in the White House. He's done what we ask of public servants here, unlike many others.

@ashleymayer @lulumeservey @InvestLikeBest Neglecting or ignoring the media exposes yourself to tremendous reputational risk. Musk's closing of his comms team & disdain for media has probably cost Tesla at least $100b in market cap harm.

I finally listened to @lulumeservey’s interview on @InvestLikeBest and loved it. First off, it’s refreshing to hear a serious and opinionated discussion about comms on a public stage. This is a craft that’s usually in the shadows. I think Lulu’s approach (and even her rhetoric) is emblematic of a broader shift happening in startup/tech comms: from leaders and comms teams largely being on defense and trying to “manage” perception across all audiences (the default from ~2016 to 2022/2023), to (thoughtfully) taking on more risk and being on offense in service of their most important message and audience—which IMO is more consequential than the debate around working with media versus “going direct.” The considerations vary by company, category, and even founder capability, but I believe there’s tremendous business upside to being on offense with your narrative. Lastly, there are so many implications of this shift that would be fun to unpack, like what this means tactically for early stage founders who have to navigate this on their own, to the impact on employees and internal comms, to how the skill profile for comms leaders changes in this new era, to why I counterintuitively believe this will be good for reporters (and readers) in the long-run. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inv…

This week, San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) canceled an antisemitism training for educators led by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), a Jewish organization fighting hate for more than a century. JCRC Bay Area, @AJCGlobal, @ADLCalifornia and @JewishBayArea issued the following statement: Ensuring @SFUnified conducts antisemitism trainings for educators as planned — especially as the district is under a federal investigation for civil rights complaints — would avoid crossing a red line for the San Francisco Jewish community. SFUSD committed to hosting these trainings in response to a meteoric rise in antisemitic incidents following the October 7 attacks in Israel, and we are currently working with district leadership to see that they fulfill their commitment. We will not accept anything less than full inclusion and acceptance of Jewish students in one of the largest school districts in California. The trainings will help educators learn who the Jewish people are, what antisemitism is, and how to respond to the antisemitic hatred targeting students, teachers, and parents. Our Jewish organizations, SFUSD parents and allies will work to confirm the district follows through on its commitment and these trainings take place. In addition, we will continue to address a broader set of issues to secure a sense of belonging for all students in the district, from reviewing ethnic studies curricula to removing harmful biases against Jews to impelling school leaders to enforce student codes of conduct when antisemitic incidents take place. These crucial steps will help end the barrage of attacks on our students that defined last school year and create a safe learning environment for all.

Do you @elonmusk believe election was stolen? With Project 2025 that he is nurturing but denies? Institutions he has threatened to destroy? With personalized vendettas? With no compassions and only friends if you're on my side or enemies? Women's rights? Happy to debate. 95% of his administration staff won't work with him again. Even for a risk taker like me, he is too high a risk and likely too much damage. Trump would be permanent damage to our institutions for decades. Harris good or bad will be 1-2 terms. I take it seriously when he says to his Christian cohort "you won't need another election".

That's the thing. Nothing really changed for her. The Biden Admin has been horrible for startups. The firm has dozens of companies that have been illegally debanked, given wells notices for no reason, etc. So a16z made a statement about it and donates money to Dems and Republicans who support startups. None of that has anything to do with Felicia or her work.
