@Dorialexander It's funny because there was this big-ish call for AI startups in Germany that was literally the same shtick, "let's not catch up, let's leapfrog"

Vision Weekend UK is just around the corner! And for our 40th anniversary, we may have landed our best venue yet: the Barbican greenhouse. A Brutalist landmark filled with 1,500 species of tropical plants, it's a surreal setting to come nerd out about new AI modalities, longevity interventions, neuroengineering, AI for science, and novel funding mechanisms. What else is on the program at Vision Weekend UK? –– FRIDAY JUNE 5 –– VIP pre-party at @fiftyyears London HQ with speakers, sponsors, Foresight Fellows and grantees. Make sure to get your All Access ticket to join. –– SATURDAY JUNE 6 –– Looking Ahead: main summit at @BarbicanCentre: • Talks across emerging AI paradigms, neurotech, longevity, nanotech, and energy • Speaker meet-and-greets • Community office hours with leading experts • Speed friending & book swap • 1:1s with fellow futurists Evening: a VIP Cypherpunk Gala inside the Barbican greenhouse: dinner, drinks and dancing in a central London tropical rainforest. –– SUNDAY JUNE 7 –– Flourishing Futures: main summit at Bankside London: • Talks on Funding X, Pathways to Implementation, and Existential Hope in the age of AI • Participant lightning talks • Speaker meet-and-greets • $10,000 pitch contest: pitch your project for ambitious futures in AI for X • Closing ceremony The weekend ends with an after party. All Access Pass holders join speakers, Fellows, and grantees for private dinners across all days. Tickets in comments. NEW: I’m excited to announce our latest BiTS Accelerator open call. This is our second cohort with @SPRIND, Germany’s innovation agency, and it is great to see them double-down on the model. In fact, 2 participants from the first round were recruited to run large-scale programs
Renaissance Philanthropy@RenPhilanthropy

If creating conditions for breakthroughs is a better use of your technical expertise than running one more experiment, then @RenPhilanthropy's Big if True Science (BiTS) Accelerator, in partnership with @SPRIND, may be for you. We have now opened our second cohort. Read more here: renaissancephilanthropy.org/insights/appli…

@Simon__Grimm Gas also relies on a grid, storage, supply sources. It's just that this was established decades ago and doesn't require to establish a new (competing) system. Similar for nuclear, where we need fuel and means to treat used fuel etc

With renewables, I more and more think there is a central planning illusion. While people say "Ah it's cheap energy, once we fix everything else (grid, flexible pricing, batteries, etc. etc.)", they don't consider the massive political overhead and all the stakeholders who will block these changes. You see this happening in Germany. Compare this with nuclear or gas. You place it, you get stable energy, done. Far less coordination required. I still like solar and wind, especially in sunny regions. But I've become quite a bit more bearish in Northern energy markets. For more on this, I recommend the Works in Progress piece on "magical systems thinking": worksinprogress.co/issue/magical-…

If any world class German researchers want to incubate a German sovereign AI Lab, please reach out. The right team will succeed now that it's beyond clear Aleph Alpha isn't it. All of KV's sovereign lab bets have crushed. We know how to make this playbook work.

@SebJohnsonUK @SPRIND any founder who actually has the skills and team to build a frontier lab and spends their time on this crap rather than actually starting the business and raising private capital is wasting precious time and will regret it

The German Federal Innovation Agency is running a €125m competition to fund 3 new Frontier AI labs in Europe! "Next Frontier AI" is a pan-European initiative led by @SPRIND to create three globally relevant Frontier AI labs. It starts with a €125m challenge where up to 10 teams receive funding over 24 months to build frontier-lab capabilities, including team, infrastructure, prototypes, evaluation discipline, and early pilots. The best-performing teams will then receive structured support toward raising ~€1 billion each. Europe has some of the top AI companies in the world, but as a continent we are massively dependent on frontier labs from other countries. This initiative seeks to change that and I am HERE FOR IT.

@SebJohnsonUK @halvarflake @SPRIND If it could be done on a shoestring wouldn’t there be more frontier labs already? Not that this couldn’t support interesting, important and impactful work. Just “frontier” is a curse of a label to stick on it. Which countries? EU?

@SebJohnsonUK @SPRIND Provocative Question: aside from political resilience, do we even need a frontier lab? It means huge invest (anthropic 67 billion so far), huge risks, in a sector, where we have never been very very competitive. I believe our strength rather lies in the proprietary data we own.

@SebJohnsonUK @SPRIND They are missing at least one zero to make any impact whatsoever. We don't have enough compute, that shit is expensive. Or we need to rip off some open source model as a starter. But still, there wasn't a lack of initiative, but, as always in Europe, a lack of funding.

@SebJohnsonUK @SPRIND We talking about developing frontier model capacity or applied AI / wrappers? Any new EU lab has a lot of catching up to do, if they do not start with rl on an open sourced model
