New Zealanders are fed up with brazen offending. Today I announced National will implement stronger sentences for convicted criminals, to restore law and order and make our communities safer. We will limit the ability of judges to reduce sentences, we’ll make gang membership an aggravating factor, restore Three Strikes and end taxpayer funding for cultural reports. Instead, we’ll divert that funding to provide more support for victims, who should be at the heart of the justice system. National will also extend eligibility for prisoner rehabilitation programmes to the half of prisoners who are currently unable to access them. If offenders want to turn their lives around, National will help them do that.
