Claim rejected over just two letters of the alphabet? That’s what happened when Sundar’s (Name changed for privacy reasons) son needed eye surgery. Sundar got family health insurance through Ditto in November 2023. Just a month later, his son was diagnosed with severe vision issues requiring LASIK surgery. During the process, doctors discovered tears in his retina, making surgery a medical necessity. But the insurer denied the cashless claim, suspecting foul play since the plan was only a month old, and “eye issues don’t pop up randomly”. Sundar then submitted all post-surgery reports for reimbursement, but they denied the claim again! That’s when he turned to Ditto. We demanded an explanation from the insurer, and they claimed it was due to the non-disclosure of “PG” (which they mistakenly interpreted as Pigment Glaucoma) in the doctor’s notes. But we didn’t stop there. First, we consulted another ophthalmologist who found no signs of Pigment Glaucoma. Then we contacted the original doctor, who clarified that “PG” stood for “prescription glasses” (a common abbreviation used by ophthalmologists) not Pigment Glaucoma. After presenting this evidence and conducting a thorough investigation, we successfully got the insurer to pay out Sundar’s claim. The takeaway? Always ask your insurer for clear reasons behind a claim rejection. And if it feels unjustified, don’t hesitate to challenge if you have every right to fight for what’s fair. What should you do if your insurer rejects your claim? 1. Talk to your broker first: If you bought the policy through a broker, reach out immediately. A good broker can help decode the rejection, gather documents, and escalate it with the insurer. Sometimes, one strong follow-up can change everything. 2. Re-approach your insurer: Drop an email to the insurer’s grievance redressal cell once you receive the rejection letter. Ask for the reason if it hasn’t been shared. And if they don’t respond to you within 30 days or their response is not satisfactory, go ahead and execute the next steps! 3. Talk to the ombudsman: The insurance ombudsman acts as a mediator between you and your insurer for grievances. There are 17 across the country; you can approach the one in your jurisdiction. But keep in mind- the only complaints entertained here are of the amounts up to ₹50 lakhs. 4. Approach the boss man - IRDAI There are a number of ways to do this. You can raise the complaint with IRDAI through Bima Bharosa, by calling 155255 or 1800 4254 732, or drop an email (complaints@irdai.gov.in). Bima Bharosa forwards the complaint to the insurer and allows IRDAI to monitor the grievance redressal process. 5. Knock on the courts doors: The last resort - drag your insurer to the court or a consumer forum. This can be an expensive affair to pursue. HDFC ERGO prices revised! If you’ve ever checked HDFC ERGO, you’ve probably noticed it’s positioned differently from many other plans. That largely comes down to how the product is designed and how the insurer operates. Their plans usually come with no room rent limits, no co-pay, and no disease-wise sub-limits. You also get 2X cover from day one, along with in-built consumables and strong restoration benefits. This makes claims much smoother, with fewer surprises during hospitalisation. Now here is the important update. HDFC Ergo has revised premiums in 2026 for certain cities, PIN codes, and profiles. If you fall into these categories, your premium may be lower than before, making the plan more affordable. However, this change is not for everyone. It depends on your overall profile and where you fall within these categories. So pricing can still vary from person to person. We understand the confusion. While porting with a Sum Insurance upgrade, the upgraded portion carries a fresh PED waiting period. We had walked the client through this at issuance. Additionally, claim up to the older SI has already been approved. The mixed signals for the client came from a separate conversation with Care. We are helping the client formally escalate this matter.

The problem isn't that insurance is a scam, the problem is that most people miss three things while buying their policy, and only find out about it when the claim fails. We did a podcast with @foodpharmer2 recently, and the most common comment i kept seeing was: "you just proved insurance is a scam." and to be honest, i absolutely understand where that's coming from. If you've watched a legitimate claim fail, or paid premiums for years and got nothing back, it's very obvious to have that perception. but what most people miss is that claims don't usually fail at the time of the claim. They fail because of what people did or didn't do at the time of buying their policy. and it's almost always one of these three things: → not disclosing something during purchase, even something minor like borderline cholesterol or a flagged bp reading → claiming during a waiting period they didn't know existed → assuming "full coverage" means everything is covered What makes this genuinely frustrating is that every single one of these is fixable at the time of buying. not after. This is also why we push disclosure so seriously at Ditto, even when it makes the customer uncomfortable. Some people find it annoying, and we've had people escalate over it. We're okay with that, because we know exactly what happens on the other side when you don't have that conversation. Insurance works. It just punishes you for not understanding what you bought. and that's the part nobody talks about. Here are 3 things you may check to know if your term insurer is reliable. Most people look at CSR and stop there. They assume, "This insurer settles 99% of claims and must be safe." But CSR only tells you how many claims got paid. It doesn't tell you how much was paid, how fast it was paid, or how many people had to fight to get it. So if you're buying a term plan, here are 3 metrics that actually matter: 1. Claim Settlement Ratio (averaged over 3 years) Yes, CSR does matter. To evaluate correctly, don't just look at one year's number. Insurers can have a good year or a bad year. Instead, check the average CSR averaged of the last 3 years. If it's above 97%, that's a good sign. 2. Complaint Volume (per 10,000 claims) This tells you how many people had to escalate issues. If it's above 20, that's a red flag. Complaint volumes are usually disclosed publicly by the insurers on their websites. 3. Amount Settlement Ratio Some insurers settle lots of small claims but reject the big ones. Which makes their CSR look great on paper, but in reality, families who needed large payouts didn't get them. Which is why you should try checking what percentage of the total claimed amount got paid. If it is above 90%, it is usually safe. Term insurance is something your family will claim when you're not around, and the last thing you want is for them to deal with a difficult insurer during an already painful time. If you want to see how good post sales experience of your Health Insurance company is, just dont pay premium until the last few days 😂😂. I am having pathetic experience from @careinsuranceIN . @joinditto please think twice before recommending.

The worst thing about @careinsuranceIN is that they will call (and mail also) you 10 times in a day to remind you that renewal date is coming, and when you will pay the premium as if I have taken a loan from @careinsuranceIN and not a health policy.
