@jonanderson @cbsgy12 @Sport_Sullivan Your kid developed skills at 10 and 11 to the point he never practiced on his own after the age of 12 and still made the JV team as a freshman I would be OK with that outcome. It sucks your kid didn’t follow through. Don’t blame it on the coach that got him the skills.

@Kevinmhegemann @cbsgy12 @Sport_Sullivan He would have quit after 11u if HE had it all to do over again. He made JV as a freshman while never working on baseball outside of the season from age 13 on. He never developed a love of the game. I had him on the wrong team. C'est la vie. He is in love with basketball.

@jonanderson @cbsgy12 @Sport_Sullivan So your son was beat down at 10 and 11 years old that he quit playing as a 16 year old? He developed skills and was able to translate to playing a level up at 15 but he didn’t want to do it at 16? That doesn’t sound like a 10U and 11U coaching problem.

@Kevinmhegemann @cbsgy12 @Sport_Sullivan We found a great new team for 13s and 14s and my son parlayed that into JV as freshman. But in the end he was beat down so much in 10s and 11s on a Majors championship level team worried more about winning than development, he just said f__k it. I love basketball more.

@cbsgy12 @jonanderson @Sport_Sullivan I will guarantee a kid winning and succeeding will help him enjoy the sport. Southeastern Wisconsin has a lot of youth teams around. Picking the one right for your kid (skill level, competitiveness) is more important than saying all teams are toxic.

@cbsgy12 @Sport_Sullivan Kids should absolutely play multiple positions, especially before high school. Rotating through various spots develops better overall athleticism, prevents injuries and burnout, and increases a player's longterm value to future teams. Most importantly builds a higher baseball IQ.

@jonanderson @Sport_Sullivan Try each position in practices and understand winning doesn’t matter, but sometimes the way you can secure the most fun for kids in parks department youth baseball is playing them at the positions they enjoy playing at

@TakingHisTime Like I said before, not in Nebraska. And not even close. The baseball parents are WAY worse.

@fitfromthepast @Sport_Sullivan Might be the one thing that gets my kid back into baseball. Pitching is huge. I'd love for him to play NAIA or D3 basketball in the Midwest someplace and pitch for kicks on the baseball team. All while getting a great education.

@Sport_Sullivan @jonanderson Play non travel but get a pitching coach once a week, work on those skills with your kid, pitchers are gold, those travel teams years later will pick him up for free to pitch in tournaments

@cbsgy12 @Sport_Sullivan Much much more importantly, no set batting order at these younger ages. All it does is negatively enforce weakness on the late bloomers and smaller kids.

@jonanderson @Sport_Sullivan See I really disagree with the “no set positions” thing. I get the point, but even in youth baseball you kinda know who’s capable of playing what position. Even at 9 I knew I wasn’t a LFer or SS. I didn’t want to play there. My most hated inning is when my dad tried me at catcher

@jonanderson Ain't nobody saying "Man, AAU basketball is really well run and a pleasant atmosphere." Non-travel sports are, generally speaking, fine. It's the club/travel culture across the board that has the shittiest of adults.

@nowhere2go74 @Sport_Sullivan All the best players played three sports back in my day for sure. Those days sadly are over. Once you get to high school that is. Very few will be very good at more than one if they play multiples.

@Sport_Sullivan @jonanderson Your kid will be better rounded doing the things he enjoys outside of a single sport . All the best players when I was a kid played 3 sports. Also, he will develop a better body composition playing different sports.

@Sport_Sullivan #1 avoid coaches in 8u 9u 10u who play kids at set positions with a set batting line up. Kids need to play everywhere until middle school. Also find parents you want to be around. And remember all that matters is what your kid can do on day 1 of HS tryouts.

Nope, you openly sneered over the ignorance of rural America and turned those towards me in just about every class we had together. Then, you turned a dying Nebraskan’s take that we should live life more thoughtfully into an asinine liberal dog whistle. Ben Sasse has more political talent, thoughtfulness, and humanity in his cancer-ridden pancreas than you could hope to have in a lifetime. I’m done engaging with you. I’m going outside to play with my three kids. It’s a gorgeous day, and I’m going to enjoy it rather than fight on X. ✌️

Fish, we were undergrads at Yale together. I was the first-gen kid from rural Nebraska you regularly belittled. Your dad was in Congress for 40 years, and you’ve spent life with your ego stoked by proxy. Leave my Senator’s name out of your mouth, you spoiled insufferable brat.
Fish Stark@fishstark

All right @BenSasse, let's make a bet. Let's divide the US in half. I'll let you pick which half. In your half, you ban Candy Crush. In my half we institute 16 weeks of paid parental leave, universal childcare, & a restored child tax credit. Let's see which has more babies.
