I am heartbroken beyond words. The Fairfax family and my family have been close for as long as I can remember. Our parents knew one another. We grew up in each other's lives. The bond between our families is one I have always carried with me, and today that bond is breaking under the weight of an unthinkable loss. My prayers are with Cerina's and Justin’s children, who have lost both of their parents. My prayers are with the entire family, who is carrying a grief no one should ever have to carry. My prayers are with every loved one, friend, and neighbor trying to make sense of the unimaginable. Please hold their family in your hearts.  Out of respect for the family and their privacy during this devastating time, I will have no further comment.

My heart is with the congregation at Temple Israel in Michigan and with Jewish communities across the country today. No one should ever have to fear walking into a synagogue, sending their children to school, or practicing their faith. I am grateful to the security professionals and first responders whose quick action helped protect lives today. This attack is another painful reminder that antisemitism is real, dangerous, and rising in our country. We must confront it clearly and without hesitation. In Washington, we know this threat firsthand. The shooting at the Capital Jewish Museum last year showed us that antisemitic violence is not something distant happening somewhere else — it is a real threat that demands serious leadership and a sustained commitment to protecting our communities. Jewish families deserve to live openly and safely in every neighborhood and every city in America. Protecting that freedom is a basic responsibility of government.
