This is me mindlessly scrolling Twitter instead of reading the book I sat down with.
Ashwin Sinha@ashwinning

@gdb Holy s**t this is amazing! When you're so bored, you'd literally stand there and watch noisy TV.

@tigran_zzz @levelsio @eTRoWlEs This is very common in Australia for the same reason. Doesn’t really get that cold, so shorts are fine year-round but sometimes a hoodie required.

@arvidkahl @levelsio That’s “go to path”. To get copyable path, option+right click > Copy “<name>” as Pathname. Or keyboard shortcut is ⌥⌘C I have “New Terminal at Folder” in my right-click Services menu too.

IKEA website shows a verbatim copy of the physical printed receipt in HTML, complete with logo, exact transaction details, and mono font. It goes on for another 300 lines. Whoever did this at IKEA, come forward, you have been recognized! 🏆

@stalman Really? Until now I assumed there’s no way I could ever attempt one of these since I’m susceptible to car motion sickness and simulator type amusement park rides.

@alzxk11 @tomchapin @VadimYuryev pfft I was doing video editing just fine on an M1 Air with 8GB RAM a few years back. Ok, so I was targeting 1080p export and had to use proxy footage. IMHO the main issue with 8GB of RAM is you can't have many web browser tabs open. 😆

@tomchapin @VadimYuryev The target audience for the MacBook Air is casuals, I haven’t seen a single person doing any kind of pro work (pro meaning video editing, game development, etc.) on a MBA because it’s not built for those kinds of tasks. For pro-level tasks, you can get a Pro with 32+ GB of RAM.

WHAAAAAAT!!! Why did I not notice tihs right away??? Apple upgraded the previous M2 and M3 MacBook Air to start with 16GB at the SAME price. Only $999 for a redesigned MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM?! Apple is all about value this year!

@feulf @VadimYuryev my guess... the memory bandwidth goes from 150 to 273 GB/s so if that matters, like if you're using local LLMs then maybe. On other performance fronts, probably not. (But sell me your M3 Pro if you do... 😆)

@levelsio @Starlink No way you are carrying that in a backpack and pulling it out and plugging it into a huge power bank in the middle of nowhere 😂

Ordered the @Starlink Mini Time to just go around the Portuguese landlords that all cheapen out on internet wanting to pay $10/mo for 20mbps limited fiber While my entire work life depends on fast internet Time to get my internet straight from space 🛰️ ~$70/mo and it'll work anywhere in the world Fits in my backpack so I can travel with it too!

@jmmv @fchollet @rsms What’s insane is that same system running in _emulation/virtualisation_ will be even faster on a current machine… and then put it next to current software = 😭

Computing used to feel fast -- everything ran locally, software was mostly in C/C++ and was kept in check by the need to run on all kinds of old hardware. Now any one of my Chrome tabs is using 100x more RAM than a NeXT workstation had in total.

Honestly, this is part of the reason I’m skeptical that “model collapse” is a genuinely significant problem It’s SO TEMPTING to believe in it! The schadenfreude of AI models destroying themselves through consuming their own junk is irresistible
🌹🧸Hal is in the air tonite 💝😘@halphelt

Hearing that AI models are collapsing because AI bros poisoned their own well by flooding the internet with loads of slop that’s being fed back into the training data with no way to sift it out. It fills me with such schafenfreude

@d_feldman very cool... the higher safety requirements obviously make the effort invested into automatic tooling have a much higher return. I'm just in lowly ol' mining electronics 🤭

@josh_m @on_godot @Shawnryan96 Sone places get pretty rough in the winter too - I tried walking around Kansas City, Kansas one winter and people thought I was crazy for not driving a car for distance of two blocks(!) because it was so cold

@on_godot @simonw @Shawnryan96 - I go to the hardware store w/ my bike. Have carried a propane tank. Stopping in at the grocery store is fine - work has showers. or ebike - I can take a call fine: noise cancellation works well Australian cities are built around cars as well, so some adjustment is required.

@d_feldman This is the interesting bit, suggests the models are used to drive the implementation... but is that generated? hand-written? my curiosity here is as an embedded software dev writing functional safety-compliant C... so MISRA jumped out at me, and that's a... C standard
