Carl Menger, Father of Austrian Economics. Great comparison of his insight versus the silly “labor theory of value” upon whose pebble his entire edifice of crank economics (exploitation, false consciousness) balanced.
Handre@Handre

This dude named Carl sits in his study in 1871, probably wondering why classical economists kept insisting that labor creates value when any fool could see that a glass of water means nothing to someone drowning but everything to someone dying of thirst. The Principles of Economics drops that year and basically nukes the entire labor theory of value that Smith and Ricardo built their reputations on. The genius wasn't just marginal utility itself; Menger figured out that value flows backward from human satisfaction to goods, not forward from some mystical "socially necessary labor time" that Marx was busy scribbling about in London. He used bread, horses, concrete examples - not abstract mathematical bullshit. Jevons and Walras stumbled onto similar insights around the same time, but Menger went deeper. Those guys got distracted by their fancy equations while Menger built the foundation for understanding human action itself. The Methodenstreit with Schmoller's crew was inevitable. You can't overturn 100 years of economic orthodoxy without making enemies... Classical economics never recovered. Sure, it took decades for the old guard to die off, but Menger lit the fuse that eventually exploded into the Austrian school we know today.

"Capitalism created the possibility of the win win win. It used to be a zero sum game where somebody won, somebody else lost. The biggest mistake people make, intellectuals in particular, they still think we're in a zero sum world. They're obsessed with some billionaires because Bernie Sanders thinks that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk somehow stole the money from the people. They don't understand that it's this prosperity machine that's creating more, not just for those billionaires, but for everything that they're touching. They're creating value for their customers, they're creating value for their employees. Their suppliers are flourishing, their investors are seeing their capital go up. It can be reinvested and compound. All philanthropy ultimately comes from business. That's where the profits are. Where does all the taxes come from? It ultimately comes from business as well. This is the engine that's lifting humanity out. The entrepreneurs are the drivers of that engine. Somebody like Elon Musk, he gets a very, very, very tiny sliver of the value that he creates for the whole world." — @iamjohnmackey

Translation: people are leaving because it’s too expensive, so the plan is to make it more expensive for the people still paying the bill, who will then transfer it to everyone else. And he says it openly, one group will be forced to subsidize another. No pretense, just redistribution framed as retention. But incentives don’t disappear because you ignore them. The people you tax more have more ability to leave. The people you’re trying to help have less reason to produce more. So you get both: capital exits and stagnation at the bottom. Then when the tax base shrinks, the answer is always the same, raise taxes again. It’s not a solution, it’s a loop, inevitably going downwards.

🚨WTF?? NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announces he's hitting the wealthy with MAXIMUM taxes to convince others to stop leaving the city: "I'll ask those who make the most amount of money [to] pay more so everyone can STAY IN THIS CITY!" We warned you.

@Caolan_Scully Great 2nd half but should have found touch with the last penalty; would have given a chance to make it a one-score game with Munster receiving the kick-off.

No one in Irish rugby should ever consolidate themselves with “moral victories” or “tried hard” But Jack Crowley has been responsible in some capacity for all 21 points so far, and deserves credit for that

Translation: I’ve identified where wealth exists, so I’m going to redefine taking it as “fairness.” No crime is being alleged. No rights violation is being corrected. The entire justification is that someone has more, therefore the state is entitled to it. Notice how “fair share” is never defined by principle, only by target. It’s not about equal rights under the law, it’s about unequal treatment justified by outcome. One group produces, another is politically selected to pay. And the quiet part: if this were actually about funding something effective, there’d be accountability for what’s already been taken. Instead, failure just becomes the argument for taking more. So it isn’t about justice. It’s about normalizing the idea that success is a liability and entitlement is a claim.
Elizabeth Warren@SenWarren

Elon Musk has 6.5 MILLION times more wealth than the typical American. It’s time for a wealth tax — billionaires must pay their fair share.
