🚔 Mario, retired cop here. Just to clarify how this actually works: There are two main reasons we apprehend someone for a mental health assessment. 1. Police believe the person is a threat to themselves or others (based on what we see or reliable info). 2. A Justice of the Peace or Judge issues an order after sworn statements often from family that the person is seriously unwell and/or a danger to themselves or others. In this case he’ll be taken to hospital, assessed by the acute mental health team, and held only if needed. What can feel off is the lack of paperwork at the roadside. Police only need reasonable grounds. They’d have been dispatched or notified about the existing order. It can seem strange, but that’s how the Mental Health Act works to protect people in crisis. It’s far from perfect but that’s all we have.

The "impassable" Ardennes forest had just funneled seven Panzer divisions through France's weakest hinge. The next day, Churchill flew to Paris. He asked General Gamelin a single question: "Where is the strategic reserve?" Gamelin shrugged. "Aucune." None. France had no reserve. There was nothing behind the line that had just broken. Churchill later wrote that this was one of the greatest shocks of his life. The country he'd grown up believing had the finest army in Europe had already lost the war. They just didn't know it yet. Six weeks later, Paris fell.
