Each dot represents 10 people whose lives depend on US foreign aid for HIV prevention & treatment. Without it, 1.6m people could die per year. @charlesjkenny & I were pleased to work with @NickKristof and the NYT data viz team to show the stakes of what’s happening at USAID.

Feeding school kids has always been more about fairness and nation building than raising test scores. My new blog reviewing key moments and milestones in the history of school meals over the past century, marking this year’s international school meals day.cgdev.org/blog/how-schoo…

3 JMPs this year (!) find pollution-haven effects in battery recycling: 1. @elitzow et al in Mexico: erinlitzow.github.io/MyFiles/JMP_Li… 2. Gerald Ipapa in Kenya: drive.google.com/file/d/1-00MNO…. 3. @moogdho_mahzab et al in Bangladesh: drive.google.com/file/d/1Yd5W0p… There seems to be a pattern here.

Has anyone tried to measure the impact of introducing/improving Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) on student outcomes--either participation outcomes or learning outcomes? I'd be interested in studies in any context (i.e., high-income, middle-income, low-income).

CGD is looking for a new president. Here’s why (I think) you should be applying, which I hope reflects the kind of people (I think) we want. Note CGD doesn’t have institutional positions (see below) –so maybe other people here see/want something different :-).

Ethiopia’s secondary school leaving exam system has been exposed to have collapsed. Did the political economy of unbridled university expansion play any part in this? @jrossiter0 and I try to take a closer look at that questions in this blog. cgdev.org/blog/pork-barr…

This paper offers a powerful new narrative about globalisation & global poverty since 1980 Bottom line: sure economic openness & trade integration played an important role; but without massive public invt in education, global poverty would never has been reduced nearly as much

Reminder: join us Monday 9:30am ET for the big reveal Have billions in US aid moved the needle on reading scores? Was it a waste to evaluate the 'same' program model over and over again?
Justin Sandefur@JustinSandefur

Federal law requires USAID to evaluate *all* its basic education programs -- that means dozens of RCTs and diff-in-diffs across 30+ countries. Join LeAnna Marr (USAID), Ben Piper (Gates), Erin Collinson (CGD) and me to discuss the results Nov 20 cgdev.org/event/phonics-…

@AnneleiseHall @MrJackLowe @stephen_carley It needn’t be unpaid & I didn’t suggest it would be. There’s value in the tents, lots of it. So orgs who would benefit from those tents might want to capture the value & put it to use. Nothing to do with the morals of why they’re there, just what to do with the now free tents
