Hey friends, I built this little site to help anyone managing engineers to run 1-on-1s: 1on1s.robwhelan.com (or to help engineers better understand what their managers are doing, or could be doing) Feedback welcome; hope this helps! Wish I could share my notes with past-me.

@Dan03292062 @TheLaurenChen Shrug. It feels like a blazingly obvious better approach, living here. When I visit family back in the US it seems like people just don't realize how much of a difference it makes, just because they don't have an option to try.

@sergeykarayev I don't understand the jump from validation that these tools are valuable to... AGI None of these people are stepping back from directing the tools

@gustorresq @diorvijane Nah. Think about it. 1. She's *not* playing that game, just wants to go on with her day, but you're getting insistent/ forceful... ugh, nightmare with no winners 2. She *is* playing a game... and you encourage it; why?? Let her miss out and learn.

@diorvijane See, that's the main problem. In your case you didn't like the guy and everything went well but I have seen lots of posts of girls saying no, just to see if the man tries harder. That's why some people insist even when they get a negative response.

a guy at the gym asked for my number. i gave an unapologetic no and he replied "that's not a problem, have a great evening". there are an unimaginable amount of people who won't understand how refreshing that is. this post is for those people to take note.

@levelsio I guess this is part of "owning the libs" and it's somehow winning in some obscure way It's vile, though

@levelsio Imagine if everything you said — no matter how articulate, backed up by your experience & expertise — was just ignored in favor of vague musings on your body language & your sex. They conclude that you're just hot for the person you loathe. They do not touch the actual points.

@teachthemx3 Part of this that makes sense — the student screwed up, and now has extra work to learn the material, retake tests, catch up on work missed, etc. But the teacher was ringing the alarm from the start; where were the counselor & parents then? The teacher is very poorly supported.

A teacher at my school came into my room after dismissal yesterday and showed me an email she received (summarized with her permission, student’s name has been changed): Counselor: Johnny’s parents are concerned because he’s only failing your class. Any idea why? Teacher: Attaches detailed phone log of conversations with parents sharing her concerns about the student sleeping in class and playing games on his Chromebook instead of working. Teacher also shares the 2 office referrals for cheating which resulted in zeros for test grades. Counselor: We’re going to allow him to retake the 2 tests he cheated on. Additionally, please make arrangements with the student to attend your after school tutorials and re-teach the lessons so he can make up the additional work he is missing. She didn’t even reply. She’s genuinely considering not coming back after Thanksgiving break.

@jimnasyum @kristoph @Grady_Booch As you said, they are not succeeding — so we have a new pitfall for junior software engineers, and that makes it more clear that we still do need engineers who understand what they're creating — now with more automation & guidance.

@kristoph @Grady_Booch It's different. We used to give up routine tasks to automation, but the new juniors are giving up critical thinking to LLMs now, leading to really bad results in many cases.

This is why DEI is important so you aren't ignorant about, you know, the world and understand different cultures and religions. This man is overwhelmed and saying Allahu Akbar (God is greatest!), "Oh My God!" in English, and also he says, "There is no God but God" in Arabic. He is not celebrating this disaster. He's uttering it in a moment of crisis and as a prayer. "
RT@RT_com

'That's a plane, bro! I caught that on camera! Yo! Allahu Akbar!' Full version of eyewitness video, which as man gets into BMW with a Palestinian flag lucky charm & drives away Won't judge harshly for what people say in these moments - most us never witness a live plane crash

@Grady_Booch It seems like a bias-amplification tool. I read a study years ago about how men with less "adult" faces — wider eyes, smaller nose, etc — were more often convicted of crimes given equivalent evidence against them. ...an AI would be *great* at automating that judgment.

@Mochievous I love this; so many kids are like this, and so many "strangers" are lovely people like you, but you see the worry in the comments. "Parents: what if you don't know the answers?" These are the most important ones! I say I don't know, we take guesses, and we find out together.

ps: I didn’t decline as I genuinely didn’t mind and even if i did, my partner was fine switching with me. I traveled alone sometimes as a child & my parents put me in care of strangers. Thankfully, they were super well behaved kids who gave me a bright spot in the day. The end

on my flight, I was sat beside two kids. The hostess came up to me and asked if i could do her a favour. She said, the kids (8 & 12) were traveling alone and if I could please watch them especially when we touch down. The plan was to hand them over to ground staff.

@stephsmithio If they stand still and just support their current offering, they will be go out of business, because their features are gradually copied into Google calendar, Outlook calendar, etc.. This stays true indefinitely.

@jtheory Overall, I would say there were lots of safeguards, but it wouldn’t be impossible. That said i think you’d need a pretty crazy risk/reward assessment to do it

@kefimochi @Trask899 As a manager: if someone was blocking what (comparing to other promos) seemed a valid promo, I'd ask for concrete reasoning to explain it so my report would understand. Without that, of course this is demoralizing & causes attrition (for others too, not just the person blocked).

@kefimochi @Trask899 Good luck, though also keep good notes on your own laptop, both details of the process & added context from your manager. I do think your manager bears most of the responsibility here; Either they successfully justify the promo or raise the issue higher if it's blocked unfairly.
