Political battles can be fought in public, but targeting a sitting judge through campaigns, edited videos and vilifying content strikes at the very foundation of judicial independence. Delhi High Court Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma has indicated contempt proceedings over defamatory and contemptuous content linked to the ongoing excise policy case. Institutions cannot function if litigants seek to pressure, intimidate or publicly discredit judges when proceedings do not go their way. Disagreeing with a judgment is a legal right. Running campaigns against the judiciary is not.
