Days before America celebrates its 250th birthday, former President Barack Obama is drawing renewed attention to the Founding Fathers' ties to slavery.
Obama said leaders like George Washington helped build the nation while also owning slaves, calling that contradiction a "deep flaw" at the heart of America's founding.
"I think sometimes we get confused in thinking that these two stories are separate. They're intertwined, right? Which is why it's possible for me to be a great admirer of George Washington, and also acknowledge he was a slaveholder," he said in a recent interview.
As Americans prepare for Independence Day celebrations across the country, Obama is using the occasion to argue that the nation's founding ideals and its history of slavery cannot be separated.

@AskUSBank I have a personal checking account and am signer on a business account…any idea why I can’t link the two on my iPad. I can on iPhone and windows laptop. Maybe a setting that I don’t recognize?
@FoxNews Iran has been in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty since 1970. It legally binds Iran as a non-nuclear weapons state and forbids the acquisition of nuclear arms. So Trump is just spouting propaganda to justify war.
BREAKING: President Trump reveals there won't be a deal with Iran until the regime agrees to NEVER have a nuclear weapon:
“Iran will not have a nuclear weapon, and we agreed to a lot of things, but they didn’t agree to that... If they don’t agree, there’s no deal. There’ll never be a deal. Iran will not have a nuclear weapon."
I’m about to get married, and my fiancé knows I have an inheritance that was left to me by my grandparents. It’s in my name only, and I’ve been saving it for years. Now he’s saying that before we get married, I should put the entire inheritance into a joint account so we can “start fresh together,” or he doesn’t think we should go through with the wedding. I’m 33 already and this is something my family worked hard to leave me. I’m torn between wanting to build a life together and feeling like I’m being pressured to give up something important to me. What do you think I should do?
BREAKING: Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich reveals Melania Trump's statement pushing back on false connections to Jeffrey Epstein "came out of left field" for reporters at the White House:
"We had no heads up on this. We're not getting any information from them now, including whether or not the president was aware she would be making this statement. It's unclear to us if she is reacting to something that's already happened, already come out, or getting ahead of a story that might be about to drop. We don't really know."
