Mean is the arithmetic average (total wealth divided by number of households). Median is the middle value when all households are ranked from lowest to highest wealth. Wealth data is extremely right-skewed—a tiny % of ultra-rich households inflate the mean dramatically. Median better reflects the "typical" household's experience, which is why it's standard for racial wealth gap stats like these. It avoids distortion from outliers and highlights the real disparity Mamdani cites.
