@DDFStrand One of the fallouts from Yoder/Hauerwas/Hays etc. was that the entire damn debate in Christian political and social ethics was framed as a debate between Yoder and Hauerwas, as if that exhausted the options.

John Howard Yoder’s three-pronged claim for ethics and politics:
1) Jesus’ example and teaching are the norm and measure for Christian ethics
2) the example of Jesus is a political program the church is called to embody and witness
3) the content of that ethic is nonviolence

@DDFStrand The first essay I ever wrote in grad school was on Yoder, focusing on his pacifism and the exousia. I was underwhelmed and that was 1981. He only got worse.

Active duty military and especially those in military leadership are supposed to be nonpartisan. When you put on the uniform you are subject to restrictions (UCMJ) and professional norms that forbid this sort of behavior. It’s very bad.

Two things can be true: Russia is the aggressor in this war and has fought indiscriminately and brutally. Also, the US and Europe have been unnecessarily provocative, ignoring red lines that the Russians made public about NATO expansion.

She lets him off the hook too easy in this clip. It’s not complicated. And the stuff the President has been saying last week on this point is completely wrong. Russia did in fact attack Ukraine without being attacked first. Russia launched an aggressive war against Ukraine to seize its territory. There is no way to justify Russian aggression on just war principles. We gotta be able to say that and to call out those who pretend otherwise.

I haven't said JD is right very much lately, but boy, is he right here. The ahistorical nature of the attacks on Trump for doing what all presidents have done--including writing many executive orders in the first weeks of their terms—is pretty staggering.
