There’s something we don’t really talk about enough. Nigeria is connected to some of the most powerful undersea cables ever built: MainOne, WACS, ACE, Glo-1. Billions of dollars of infrastructure sitting right off our coastline. Yet most of my mutuals and I are still buying 1GB for ₦1,000, and it’s finishing in 2 hours. Something is just so deeply wrong, and most people don’t even know where to point the finger.

I am a good judge of leadership character. The week Ken Nnamani was to become Senate President I argued in a Thisday article that Ken would be great because he is a man who reads books and always asks after ideas. I used to buy him books as Harvard student and we discuss those ideas. I know that learning and leading go together. I became his special adviser and we pulled a great success at the Senate. The same with Peter Obi. He respects ideas and loves to seek it. Once he entered my office, and quickly went to the book shelf to pick up “Why Nations Fail’. Another day we were discussing why Nigeria and Indonesia are growing apart and I told him about the book of the same title by Peter Lewis. He said he was going to meet Peter Lewis and asked for the book to read. He came back with better understanding of the ideas. If you seek ideas then you can lead better. I made that bet with Ken Nnamani and he was excellent. I make the bet again. Peter Obi will be excellent as Nigerian president.

Lawyers cannot insulate themselves from scrutiny: whether on the quality of their work or the value they place on it. The ongoing debate on pricing for legal/notarial services is both necessary and legitimate. Nigerians are asking valid questions about how professional fees are determined. Lawyers who are confident in their practice should be able to justify their fee structures transparently and objectively. So far, I have not seen a persuasive justification for charging 10% of the value of a property merely for witnessing documentation. Most arguments in support of this practice appear largely dogmatic, relying only on a false discretion that a lawyer has to set his professional fee. By contrast, the arguments against this 10% charge - particularly those articulated by @DrJoeAbah - are far more reasoned and substantive. Anyone who argues in support of a lawyer's discretion to fix his professional fee should provide additional reasoning on how 10% of the value of a property constitutes a fair amount to charge for witnessing the documentation of a property. We must be honest and hold ourselves to the highest standards. Going to the Law School is not a license to engage in legalized fraud.
