Nicholas Van Cleave was found incompetent to stand trial on Jan. 8, 2025, due to a psychotic disorder from multiple sclerosis plus cognitive issues. Multiple restoration attempts failed, so the premeditated murder charges (shooting roommate Richard Lavietes 5 times in the head, then dismembering the body) were dismissed. He's under long-term civil commitment.
