It might be a feature that was planned years ago, but isn’t it a bit of a stretch to call it a coincidence that they introduced it shortly after Hytale did?
This isn’t about taking sides or making comments like “Look, they’re copying Hytale!!”
Even if Minecraft had planned this a long time ago, they might have decided to release it immediately after seeing the positive feedback from players and reassessing the feature’s usefulness once it arrived in Hytale—which is my take on it.
I’m really happy this feature came to Minecraft; having to download a mod just for a friends list has always bothered me. If the reason for these great changes is competition (which it totally is, by the way), I hope we continue to see this kind of positive development for both sides in the future.

Had to arrive a competitor to push it out the door of their studio. Hytale has been out for less than a year, in Early Access. Call it alpha, and not even that.
Mojang is a bit slow on doing things the community asks for, ngl.
