I agree with almost everything you wrote, especially about dimensionality reduction. The brain is extremely data-efficient and I believe that a huge part of its secret is to assume a deterministic world while ignoring random signals. The trick is to take all of it and build a powerful computer program that can be demonstrated on a small scale. The proof is the pudding. This is my goal.

Neuroscience bits from my research: solving perception. Just one breakthrough may do it. I wrote recently that solving the intelligence problem awaits only one major theoretical breakthrough: generalized perception. Once perception is solved, all the other problems will be a walk in the park in comparison, since they all depend on perception. My main area of research is the visual system of the human brain. I've come to understand that, other than the precise timing of discrete events, the other important principle of visual perception can be deduced from the peculiar architecture of the retina. There is a gold mine in the retina. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) detect edge movements. An edge is the contrast or difference in luminance between adjacent spots on the retina. What is peculiar is that every RGC is tuned to a specific orientation and direction of motion. I happen to know (I can't reveal my source at this time) that the retina can detect edge movements in 10 orientations and 20 directions (2 per orientation). I am now firmly convinced that this 10x20 arrangement is the mother lode, so to speak. I believe it is the main key that will unlock the mysteries of visual perception. It's logical to expect that cortical columns in the visual cortex are precisely designed to exploit it for learning and on-the-fly percept construction. My thesis is that all the sensory modalities obey analogous principles. Once visual perception is solved, the others will fall like dominoes. 😊 I'm excited. Ideas pop into my consciousness every day. A breakthrough can happen at any time. 😮🤔
