Racial equity is not just "giving individual students what they need to succeed." Part of what students need is to not experience racism at school. That requires institutional antiracism, not just individual differentiating.

ROHINGYA CENTRE OF CANADA 🇨🇦
Proud to be in this city. Kitchener home to Rohingya community since first Rohingya family arrived to Canada. Now more than 600 Rohingya call Kitchener home. We love this City.
Berry Vrbanovic@berryonline

My family, including 2.5 yr old me, arrived to Canada in 1969 and to @CityKitchener in 1977. Our region is now among top 5 big urban areas in Canada for immigration, making us a more diverse & vibrant community as a result! Read more: kitchener.citynews.ca/local-news/reg… via @CityNewsKIT

Echoing the article: "What if every student appreciated and understood the lived experiences of diverse people they shared space with?" What a beautiful world this could be...

"Muslim, Arab, & Brown youth have become normalized targets of bullying since 9/11, magnifying the need for adults and educators to actively work to reverse these impacts (Bajaj et al., 2016)." Powerful article by @SJEducate: ncte.org/blog/2022/09/t… #choosethemargins #StreetData

White friends: Soaking in the learning of internal self-reflection and anti-bias work while delaying the work of institutional and systemic antiracism is an expression of entitlement.

@JBradshaw01 Deep apologies to you for your harm by whiteness. I hope you can begin to heal now that you've named it. Thank you for sharing your experience. As an instructor of English as an additional language, I strive and advocate to know better and do so much better by students like you.

When I was in elementary school, I was placed in ESL because I have a lisp, even though English is my only language and I spoke and read it fluently. At an advanced level, even. There were other kids of Afro-Caribbean descent there too, and I still have no idea why… 1/2

This is why we need qualified ESL teachers doing assessments on students to determine language proficiency and needs. Many students speak an additional language or languages at home and do not actually need ESL programming. Fund qualified professionals. cbc.ca/news/canada/fi…

Dreamcatchers are a big part in Indigenous cultures, namely in the Ojibwe and Lakota communities. Understanding why non-Indigenous people shouldn't profit off of it is an important step in honouring Indigenous history and heritage. #IndigenousHistoryMonth

Stephanie Ledger@stephledger

Please check out our chapter (#9) in this new book about teaching #SLIFE. It's an honour to have my research included. This is a valuable resource for all pre/ in-service teachers of MLLs of refugee background, with emerging L1 and English literacy skills. link.springer.com/book/10.1007/9…
