King of the Rocket Men (1949). Ace scientist and fisticuffs enthusiast Jeff King uses his atomic powered rocket suit to fight the mysterious Dr. Vulcan and his plans for world domination. The rocket suit was reused in many subsequent Republic serials. It's an iconic look: aerodynamic bullet helmet and tailored leather jacket with clip belt. The atomic jetpack has three controls (on/off, up/down, slow/fast) making it easy to use. King also has a ray gun that looks suspiciously like a Luger with a metal cone over the barrel. Republic knew what the audience wanted, so every episode involved a fist fight and a jetpack flight. King of the Rocket Men was very much the Surf Dracula of his day!

Solar is the cheapest new electricity you can build in America today. You would think a president that campaigned endlessly on lowering costs would want more of it. Instead Trump’s Interior Department created a policy that forces his top appointees to personally sign off on solar and storage projects on federal land. That political review has jammed the pipeline. More than 450 clean energy projects are now at risk. That is over a third of all new power capacity this country planned to build through 2030. The solar industry estimates this bottleneck could add $81 billion to household energy bills and another $40 billion to businesses over the next seven years. A federal judge already called the policy likely arbitrary and capricious. The administration is doing it anyway. The New York City Bar Association has issued a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee opposing the nomination of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Addressed to Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Dick Durbin (D-N.Y.), the letter asserts that, “Mr. Blanche has taken actions that we believe make him unfit to lead an ethical and independent department of justice that is essential to our nation’s democracy.” “The Attorney General personifies for Americans our commitment to the rule of law and equal justice under the law. Trump has directed that the FBI no longer investigate individuals who have confrontations with ICE agents. Why? Republicans voted to strip the right of unaccompanied kids to have a lawyer represent them in immigration court. We're talking about kids who are as young as 18 months old who will now be left to fend for themselves in front of the government.

Republicans have a new favorite talking point: calling anyone who disagrees with them a “communist” instead of addressing the affordability crisis—or the fascist MAGA takeover eating their own party alive. I’ll keep calling them out.
