When they are blending they are putting sounds together that are in front of them or given to them orally. What they write is the evidence of what sounds they hear. Blending doesn’t tell you that.

You are able to see if a student is aware of the sound structure of our spoken language. We can’t assume they are attuned to the sounds within words just because they read them accurately.

Elkonin boxes are developing/assessing segmenting skills. I’m saying segmenting is a completely different skill to blending. Writing ability does not necessarily tell us about reading ability.
