"Find a unique idea" is the most overrated startup advice. Waterllama is a water tracker. The App Store had this category solved before they shipped. They still pulled 6M downloads, an Apple Design Award, and $1M a year. Design, ASO, retention, monetization. That's the whole game.

Business can grow without hard paywalls. Can confirm from personal experience. My business has been growing for 2.5 years. You can choose the business model you like. You can also sell a week trial, it helps MRR growth and reduces refund rate. With a high-quality app, retention on a weekly subscription is many times more profitable than annual.

No one making real money is doing freemium. Stop letting users skip your paywall. Install a hard paywall with a free trial: · User can't access app without starting trial · Force the decision upfront · 3-7 day free trial + yearly subscription No “let them try, they will come back if they like it” They won’t. With a hard paywall my conversion went from 2% to 27%. Freemium = zero revenue. Hard paywall = real business.

They bet everything on the model learning straight from signal. No safety net of hand-tuned rules. If the user embedding is off, no heuristic saves you. The whole thing breaks. Depending on how they handle feedback loop bias, this either ages beautifully or gets ugly fast. Going to clone it and dig into the scorer this weekend. github.com/xai-org/x-algo…

Detail I liked: during ranking, candidates can't attend to each other. They only attend to user context. That means a post's score doesn't depend on what else is in the batch. Cacheable, parallelizable, deterministic. Solid engineering call.
