🇨🇳 CHINESE TRADER MAKES $500M BET AGAINST SILVER Zhongcai Futures made more than $500 million after shorting silver ahead of its recent price plunge, according to exchange data. The firm built large bearish positions in late January, equivalent to about 484 tonnes of silver, as prices topped $100 an ounce before falling sharply. Despite the drop, silver remains up about 24% this year. The gains highlight extreme volatility in precious metals and the growing influence of Asian traders in global markets.

@if_then_els3 As portrayed in history and fiction humanity is excellent joining forces when they are being hunted by a threat bigger than all of them together The latest pandemic is a great example of this With variations, at least initially the entire race followed the same path to survive

@leviathansee As the current iteration of the UN has shown, there is no such thing as unanimity. Would the threat of ASI change that? I think it can, but need at least another generation to get to that point. So a deliberate slowdown of progress is the best path forward.

If a person/entity achieves AGI, should it be kept to themselves or should it be shared with the world?

@leviathansee lame answer but depends on the entity eg. I'd rather North Korea share it with the world than just keep it to themselves but a dude like me, I agree with all my values, so it would be fine to keep it to myself and use the power asymmetry to shape the world in my image

@leviathansee If it's gatekept, it will cause more strife in society (more extreme inequality), if it's shared widely, it's only a matter of time until someone uses it in ways that can be dangerous to humanity. I don't think we're ready for this, but sounds like we won't have a choice 3/

@if_then_els3 Probably the greediest human being wants to keep the game (Society) running for as long as possible And if that already existing AGI is the Genesis of that age, maybe it can be optimized enough to deter the other iterations of AGI/ASI

@leviathansee If it's at the whim of "the greediest human" as you said in other replies, it's only a matter of time before government (assuming a superpower) commandeers it. I imagine we enter a new cold war-like era where we constantly fear annihilation, and don't know if or when it happens2/

@leviathansee Are we discussing AGI or ASI? If it's only about AGI, then there are likely still limits due to compute capacity and power. A privately run entity (company rather than state) having this would enable it to grow unfettered over time. 1/
