@BitchatMe_ Start with the apps.. move photos to @enteio or self host with @immichapp. Move email, calendar, drive, docs and sheets over to @ProtonPrivacy. Or self-host calendar and contacts via radicale. Use OpenOffice for documents.

@liamodonohue86 @SlicinHammer @BradCLemley OpenOffice can't save in .docx format (and now has unfixed security issues, so is not recommended for production use). Linux Mint ships with LibreOffice as a result – it's the more actively maintained successor project to OpenOffice.

@SlicinHammer @BradCLemley I can't remember any specific guide. I'm using Linux Mint and I installed it on mum's PC as well, she's not that tech minded. For web browser based stuff you will not notice any difference. OpenOffice and OnlyOffice are good mimicks of MS Office, just remember to save as .docx

Here is a huge positive to modern life that gets no press. I have an old 2009 Toyota, and the AUX port crapped out about a year ago. Went to YouTube. Young, enthusiastic guy explains how to fix it. It is not obvious - involves taking the dashboard apart in a counter-intuitive way, but once you see it, it's a 15 minute fix. There are actually dozens of videos showing how to do this, and they collectively have well over 200k views. Had this happened in 1995, I would have just lived with it. But the combo of the replacement AUX jack available from Amazon and the video of the simple (but not obvious) fix, I fixed it. I HAVE DONE THIS DOZENS OF TIMES. Replaced the control panel of my dishwasher. Replaced the ice maker in the fridge. Fixed a wonky sanding head on my drill press. Mastered a bandsaw technique that I use for my sculpture. On and on and on... I think it is likely no exaggeration to say billions of fixes and skill upgrades have been performed worldwide that would not have been performed if it were not for the instruction freely given peer-to-peer on YouTube. Take a moment to be happy about this. The busted item keeps performing, rather than going to the landfill. The person learning and doing the fix gains a sense of mastery and saves money. It's an unmixed blessing. Stop doomscrolling. Think of what is busted in your house, find the YouTube video on how to fix it, and fix it.

@Cryptogamii Hi! "Sleek" and "eyesore" are very subjective terms – what exactly do you mean? There are different user interface layouts and icon themes to choose from. If you want a very minimalist user interface, choose the Single Toolbar option, for instance.

@LibreOffice I would donate if LibreOffice's user interface were sleek, or at least attractive, but it's an eyesore.

@lilchiva @adesertdryad Well, LibreOffice is the most actively maintained successor to OpenOffice. Fully free and open source, of course, backed by a non-profit foundation. For desktop publishing, Scribus is a good free and open source option.

Can we talk about open source MS Office alternatives? Last I knew we had Star office, and I think one or two others. If you use one of these, which do you use and why do you like that particular flavor? I'm looking to put one on my new machine since I'm not overly interested in using the MS versions.

@Tim_The_Sandman I ended up trying a couple different ones on my Windows desktop after trying to get away from Google Docs and OpenOffice just looked the cleanest so I ended up gravitating to it and removing the rest.

Microsoft requiring you to repurchase Word every year is insane. I can’t even copy the 2000 words I already typed into another program because the document is locked behind a subscription. Not long ago, you bought the CD once and you were set until your computer died.

@SethRic27802711 Nice combo. Free and functional with Apache OpenOffice, then clean formatting through Reedsy Editor. That’s a solid setup without overcomplicating things.
