@Smileyyeg Yes, every Francophone should be taught English as part of their basic education. Knowing another language doesn't diminish your facility or regard for your native language. Refusing to learn any of the language you are surrounded by is another matter.

Should every single francophone also be forced to learn English?

Avez-vous déjà vu un passager demander un verre d’eau ou un café en anglais sur un vol d’Air Canada et se faire répondre uniquement en français? Jamais. Et à ceux qui demandent quand allons-nous arrêter d’en parler. La réponse est simple. Jamais. Par contre, on se souvient.

Mr. Rousseau is expressing what millions of Canadians who don’t know french and have tried to learn it feel. What I am tired of is that a few elites (in Ontario primarily) get to tell the 80% of Canadians who don’t speak french fluently that we need to sit on the sidelines. It’s time for a conversation about what 2 official languages actually means. What’s transpired over the last few days is not about the communication or language but about control.

Tone deaf comment on your part. The company I work for, based in Quebec, has offices and workers throughout the Canada. We have a meeting with 10 people; 9 of them are native French speaking, 1 speaks English. Guess who always switches language? Yeah, it’s ALWAYS the French-speaking people who switch to English, even if they know they are poor at it have a horrible accent. Stop being crybabies and do like most French Canadians: learn the other language! Geez!

No adult is forced to learn French just that some jobs need it. Ontario French elites? The most elite Ontario man is an uneducated monolingual from Etobicoke. I know the modern CPC focuses on self victimisation but some jobs having skill requirements isn't elitism or oppression

@JJ_McCullough Here in Belgian we don’t talk about bilingualism Majority of population in Brussels speak at least 3 different languages and we are proud about it

It’s funny how Canadian reporters will call up some random political science professor to offer their hot take on political stories, but you’ll never see a professor of linguistics quoted in any story about Canadian bilingualism. Probably because it defies all linguistic logic.

Apparemment, j’ai attiré l’attention des Québécois ici sur Twitter, alors je voudrais vous dire quelque chose dans le français que j’apprenais il y a 20 ans dans mon école d’immersion. Je veux que la culture canadienne-française survive dans les siècles à venir. C’est une contribution fondatrice à notre pays, à la civilisation occidentale, et quelque chose d’unique et de beau dans le monde. Mais je dirais aussi que la racine du mot « culture » est « culte ». La langue est importante, mais les croyances sont encore plus importantes. Croire en Dieu et en son Église est mieux que l’alternative, et c’est la seule méthode pour se sauver, dans un sens culturel, civilisationnel et personnel. C’est presque Pâques. Vous avez les plus belles églises sur notre continent. C’est un bon moment de revenir chez vous.

Enough hatred of French speakers and the sneering at bilingualism. If you’re bilingual, as I am, we made that choice and worked hard to get there and are proud of it. It’s massively widened our lives and opportunities. Stay unilingual but don’t think it’s something special.

@kevlap017 English is a vastly more useful language to learn than French, and vastly more ubiquitous in day-to-day life. This is why English is the most common second language to learn all over the world.

One of my biggest annoyances about these accusations that "bilingualism requirements advantage francophones" is that there's this assumption that francophones are like innately knowledgeable about English, that only Anglos have to learn French. And it's so stupid.

The French are at the very core of what it means to be Canadian. You boil this idea of Canada down enough, and what are you left with? The Québécois, the Crown Loyalists, and the First Nations. Everyone else sits atop the foundation built by those three.

@motivatedjoy I know as a black Jewish anti-leftist liberal woman you wont appreciate or agree with this; but “Canadian” identity is an exclusive term to refer to European people. First Nations never identified as Canadians nor do they recognize its authority or government.
