@paulg Do they actually read, or do they just skim the text?

One thing I've learned from using AIs is that the median person is unable to read paragraphs of ordinary prose. Now I understand why so many recently published books consist of snippets of text — what would be called sidebars, if the book weren't composed of them.

@ngriffin_uk @soupydev @steipete I wonder if you guys have ever taken a look at bun's source, because you ignore once again that bun has excellent test coverage, which is not "trust me bro validation".

@lowfry @soupydev @steipete i said properly and someones definition of properly may be different, it is perfectly fine if you’re all good with trust me bro validation, keep going as you are. its also fine and expected that maintainers want something more than that. if you dont like it, hit the fork button

@bygregorr @YoavCodes Tauri has unfortunately tons of driver and lib bugs, and issues with AppImage on Linux.

@soupydev @steipete I think it's not, Bun has a incredible test coverage for everything, the port isn't even done yet and the humans are also looking at the code. The rewrite still has work to do.

@steipete I think it's good reasoning to assume that vibe-coded codebases are far more likely to have issues with security, maintainability etc

@Hawful @niieani @hd_nvim Well, calling C code is inherently unsafe, it's the reason why other runtimes like Deno also have many unsafe blocks. And at the same time the Rust port isn't even done yet! They will probably look into the unsafe calls, because why wouldn't they? You judge too early.

@lowfry @niieani @hd_nvim Rust is a very particular language, that's what makes it so stable. However, you can choose to ignore these features by marking a block as 'unsafe'. There are 13,000 uses of unsafe in this new code base. It is Rust in name only.

@Hawful @niieani @hd_nvim Why do you think the port is not written sensibly for that language? Do you see more OOMs, segfaults and bugs than with the Zig version? Do you find the code inelegant? (P.s. the port hasn't even landet yet, yet you and ytdlp already have strong opinions about the result lol)

@lowfry @niieani @hd_nvim Fun use of the word 'developed', Bun was acquired by Anthropic in December of last year. The bulk of the development was already done. I don't care what language anything is written in as long as it's written sensibly for that language. The rust 'port' is not an example of this.

@Hawful @niieani @hd_nvim Bun is developed by Anthropic, Anthropic is an AI company, and AI companies make money through selling tokens. Zig banned all kinds of LLMs from the project; why should an AI company "hype up" a niche language which doesn't like AI? Tbh I understand why they explore a Rust port.

@niieani @hd_nvim The bun 'rewrite' itself is performative, so it seems fine to not waste developer time supporting a runtime that seems to be chasing hype more than stability.

i'm strongly against model companies focusing too much on harness, but i would love to hear if anyone has a strong argument for it my reason against it: if openai didn't build GPT 5.5, no one else can. this is their core competence if openai didn't build codex cli and app, we have opencode and t3code. building harness is NOT their core competence this is not saying products like claude code, codex aren't good - i genuinely think these are top tier products built by really talented people my point is - the world might be a better place if model companies focus more on their core capability and give us better, faster, safer and cheaper models, rather than competing with the ecosystem in the application layer what do you think?

What is most surprising to me about the OpenAI unit distance result is that they found it. My experience is less that frontier models can't make insights, so much as that you have to wade through piles of overconfident garbage to find them, largely canceling out the time savings.

@0D7P7 @thsottiaux @charliermarsh I don't think it's a good idea because attention is not free, and at some point the transformer does not know which token to attend to bc signal/noise ratio becomes worse and then you get "context rot". Compacting seems like the better solution, no?

@aboutberlin imo the best thing you can do is to implement some kind of tool or community which can't be replicated by AI. Focus on tools like these: allaboutberlin.com/tools/rent-map Honestly, that map could become a main project, connected to immoscout or whatever. Just my 2c.
