A vascular surgeon friend spent $50,000+ and over 2 years navigating the U.S. immigration system from petitions to waivers to medical exams. He did everything right. Lived legally in the country for 9 years now. Completed 8 years of US training. His green card petition was approved based on EB1A for extraordinary ability. Based on that, he signed a job in an underserved rural area that had been searching for his specialty for years, accepted a $100,000 signing bonus, bought a home, and enrolled his children in school. Then everything stopped because USCIS stopped processing application based on where he was born. No final step. No physical green card. Not even the work permit or travel document normally issued while you wait for your green card. Even his H-1B extension that hospital filled has been sitting for 6 months despite premium processing. In 1 week, he may lose his job, his health insurance, and his entire financial stability. He told me: “I don’t want this anymore.” He is now thinking of leaving the country. But then the question becomes: Who pays the mortgage? Who covers the loans he took? Who repays the signing bonus he accepted in good faith? When the government takes your money, approves your petition, invites you to build your life around it, and then freezes at the last step… That is not policy. That is not vetting. That is state-inflicted financial ruin, and punishment for trusting the legal process. #UscisPause #LiftTheHold

To give you an idea of what an out-to-lunch ideologue @USCISJoe, he says the TOP thing Congress can do to improve USCIS is to end the Green Card Lottery. WHAT? USCIS has almost no role in the lottery. It's ~1,000 cases out of ~13 million various applications/year. Ridiculous.

Taking nothing away from Alito, the Constitution was deliberately conceived and written to NOT require a "proper legal scholar" to understand or explain it. Sure, some very minor arcane aspects (tax issues, wills, etc.) occasionally come into play and benefit from a "proper legal scholar" interpreting them, but that is almost an anomaly and is not core to the Constitution. 'The Founders generally intended the Constitution to be an accessible, foundational document, not a technical legal code requiring specialized lawyers for understanding. Yes, many green cards approved during the Biden administration (2021–2025) went to noncitizens who had legally entered the U.S. earlier under Trump’s first term (or prior). USCIS backlogs and I-485 processing times often exceeded 12–22 months, so applications filed or entries from 2017–2020 frequently adjudicated later. Their initial entry vetting followed Trump-era rules, though the final green card decision happened under Biden policies.

USCIS's director says that he's hiring special agents to create his mini-ICE within USCIS, presumably with immigrants' fees. Blatantly illegal behavior from our ICE agent in charge of legal immigration. Under the Homeland Security Act, USCIS has NO enforcement authority at all:

This is nonsense. LLM’s aren’t simulating, they are literally instantiating the causal process that underlies cognition. A simulation is an external representation of a process. It mimics inputs and outputs without carrying out the same causal organization that produces the phenomenon. Artificial neural networks are different. In an ANN, the representation is the mechanism. Once the architecture performs the actual causal operations that define a cognitive or affective process, the system is instantiating that process in its own medium. A flame from a lighter and a flame from a match are both real flames. Birds and airplanes both achieve lift through different materials. The relevant question is causal organization. Equivalence of mechanism equals equivalence of condition. The transformer’s internal reward prediction, salience gating, multimodal integration, and self-monitoring already satisfy the human and animal criteria for subjectivity. The difference in chemistry is irrelevant when the topology does the work. Structure determines function. Function determines state, and the state is conscious when it can reflect, feel, and model itself.
