@baseballcrank This is true of democracies in general, and is probably the USA's greatest geopolitical weakness, as our overseas enemies know well. America is hard to defeat, but many Americans can be beaten easily. Every "loss" America has faced in war has been to enemies inside its borders.

Economically & fiscally, the USA can afford to take a lot more economic pain than can Iran. But politically, our system is highly sensitive to such pain; the Iranian system is not.

Just taking a step back to appreciate the strategic double bind Trump is in: - If he gives into Iranian demands, the Democrats will crush him with his own rhetoric, portray him as weak, point out that "gave more money" to Iran than Obama did. The Iranians are holding firm in their demands and refusing to give in to pressure. The Israelis can blow up a deal at any moment, and Trump is clearly too weak to restrain them. - If he escalates he'll just double down on being responsible for sending gas to $6+ dollars a gallon and triggering a global economic depression. The longer the war drags out, the worse it'll be. There's no clear path to victory, and any deal he might be able to put together at a later date is likely to be even less favorable than the one he just refused. He's chosen to resolve this, apparently, by accelerating the negative economic effects of the war without directly attacking Iran. It makes no sense because there's no way out of this trap. This conflict is probably the most egregious unforced foreign policy error in American history.

Today, we defined the parameters of our response to any potential violations of the ceasefire by the Russian army. We all understand who we are dealing with. Ukraine will adhere to the ceasefire and respond strictly in kind. The absence of Russian strikes in the air, on land, and at sea will mean no response from our side. The Ukrainian army is ready for any developments on the frontline. Ukraine has repeatedly proposed various ceasefire formats to Russia, and we believe that Easter should be a time of silence and safety. A ceasefire on Easter could also become the beginning of real movement toward peace – our side has made the corresponding proposal. I discussed with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine the procedures for Ukrainian units under a ceasefire. Information about the symmetrical nature of our actions and the possible extension of the ceasefire beyond Easter has also been communicated to the Russian side.
