I join the nation in mourning the passing of beloved actress and pioneering fashion icon and model Mam Cynthia Shange, who has passed away at the age of 76, as well as Albert Mazibuko, co-founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
My thoughts are with Cynthia Shange’s extended family, friends and her many associates in our creative industries with whom she interacted as a peer or a pathfinder.
She launched her modelling career in 1970 and within two short years, she won the Miss Natal and Miss Black South Africa titles before representing South Africa at the Miss World Contest.
As a charismatic young women, she exercised her interests in an era in which apartheid segregation was in full momentum and black women were the most disadvantaged citizens in our country.
From her beginnings in Lamontville, KwaZulu-Natal, to a starring role in Muvhango, Mam Cynthia’s life has been a personal triumph and a source of national inspiration and admiration.
We miss her already. May her soul rest in peace.
I extend condolences as well to the family, friends, colleagues and associates of Ladysmith Black Mambazo co-founder Albert Mazibuko who has passed away at the age of 77.
Albert Mazibuko was the last of the original generation of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and merits great credit for the national affection and global fame that the group’s timeless and constantly enriched music has amassed over decades – including multiple Grammys.
May Ladysmith Black Mambazo continue to grow in its creative output and continue to touch the hearts of South Africans and the people around the world.
Rest in peace, Bra Albert.
