A young man was buried on the shore of Lake Baikal about 4,400 years ago. He was a hunter, part of a small forager community that fished the lake and hunted the taiga. When researchers sequenced DNA from his teeth, they found something no one expected. He was carrying Yersinia pestis. The plague. This is the same bacterium that would one day empty medieval villages and pile bodies in the streets of 14th century Europe. It was already in his blood thousands of years before the first rat scurried off a Genoese trading ship. He wasn't alone. Ancient DNA studies over the last decade have pulled Y. pestis out of Bronze Age and Stone Age burials from Siberia to Scandinavia, some dating back more than 5,000 years. The oldest confirmed case so far comes from a hunter-gatherer in Latvia who died around 3,000 BCE. This is a problem for the story we thought we knew. Plague, as we understand it, needs infrastructure. It needs black rats and their fleas. It needs dense human populations, granaries, ports, trade routes. None of that existed in the world these people lived in. They moved in small bands. They hunted elk and gathered plants. They buried their dead in shallow graves under the open sky. And yet the bacterium was there, moving between them somehow. The early strains were different from the medieval one. They lacked the specific gene that lets modern plague survive in a flea's gut and get transmitted through a bite. Without fleas, it likely spread person to person, through the air or through direct contact. Slower. Less explosive. But present. How it traveled across thousands of miles of forest and steppe, from Siberia to the Baltic to central Europe, is still an open question. These were not empty landscapes. People moved, traded stone tools, married across bands, buried their dead in shared traditions. Something moved with them. By the time rats and fleas and cities entered the picture, plague had already been shadowing humans for millennia. It was waiting for the right conditions. #archaeohistories

SIR ALAN BATES - THANKS GOD FOR THIS MAN. EH. In 1998 Alan Bates and his partner Suzanne packed up their lives in West Yorkshire and moved to a small town in North Wales. They put everything they had into a post office. Every penny. Every hope. A future they had planned together. Two years later the software started lying. Money appeared to be missing. He called the helpline 507 times. He kept going. He kept records. He kept asking. The Post Office's response was simple. It wasn't the software. It was him. In 2003 they sent him a letter terminating his contract. No reason given. He lost £65,000. Everything he and Suzanne had invested, gone. Their private notes about him, revealed at the public inquiry decades later, described the situation with devastating corporate elegance. He had become unmanageable. That is what they called a man asking why the numbers were wrong. So he did what any reasonable person would do after losing everything to an institution that called them a liar. He spent the next 25 years fighting back with nothing. No legal fund. No media empire. No government support. Just a burning refusal to let them win. He wrote letters promising his continued and increased resolve to bring this to people who would have no choice but to act, regardless of how many years it took. It took 25. While he was fighting, at least 13 people who had been through the same thing took their own lives. People who couldn't hold on long enough. People who needed someone to believe them and found nobody there. While he was fighting, the Post Office and its lawyers billed £265 million in legal fees between 2014 and 2024. Making sure the truth stayed buried. Making sure men like Alan Bates ran out of road before they ran out of fight. He didn't run out of fight. He rejected three compensation offers he considered insults. He watched an @ITV drama turn his life into a television event. He watched politicians suddenly discover outrage they had been too busy to feel for two decades. He watched the country cry at a story it had been ignoring since 1999. In June 2024 they gave him a knighthood. Twenty-five years after calling him unmanageable. In November 2025 he settled his compensation claim. He received 49.2% of what he was owed. No executive has been charged. Fujitsu (@Fujitsu_Global) still holds government contracts. The Post Office (@PostOffice) is still standing. This country failed Alan Bates for 25 years. It failed every person who could not hold on long enough to see what he saw. It handed him a title instead of justice and called itself generous. He deserved better. They all did. Teach this man in every school in Britain. Not as a feel-good story. As a warning about what happens when ordinary people trust institutions that were never built to protect them. And as proof that one person, with nothing but the truth and the stubbornness to keep saying it, can make an entire country look at itself in the mirror. 194,4 miliardi.   Leggetelo piano, questo numero. Provate a immaginare quanti sono. Centonovantaquattro virgola quattro miliardi di euro.   Quante cose pensate che ci si possa fare con una cifra del genere? Potremmo avere la scuola migliore del mondo, le università più prestigiose del mondo, la sanità più efficiente che si sia mai vista. Una pubblica amministrazione che brilla per informatizzazione. Con una cifra del genere potremmo trovare lavoro alla gente, potremmo aumentare i salari, potremmo migliorare i contratti di lavoro. Potremmo avviare l’elettrificazione definitiva della flotta auto degli italiani, così come hanno fatto nei paesi nordici. Si poteva investire sul turismo, attrarre per anni capitali da flotte di turisti italiani e stranieri.   Invece, cosa ci abbiamo fatto con questa cifra gigantesca? Qualche rotonda? Qualche campetto da calcio? La gran parte dei progetti completati, lo dicono i dati ReGiS, è finita in acquisti di beni e servizi, bonus, contributi a privati. Le opere pubbliche vere, sotto il 5%. Sotto il 5%, capite? Cinque per cento. E intanto al 26 febbraio di quest’anno la spesa effettiva era 98 miliardi su 194. La metà. A due mesi dalla chiusura del Piano, il 30 giugno. Buona fortuna a chi pensa che si recuperi.   Questo governo è colpevole. È colpevole del più grande spreco di tutta la storia moderna del paese. Questo governo ha bruciato quasi duecento miliardi di euro per incapacità, per incompetenza, per ignoranza. E adesso pure per i trucchetti contabili, perché la CGIL ha scoperto che parte dell’aumento di spesa è solo un trasloco di scrivania, opere già pagate dallo Stato che si rietichettano PNRR per fare bella figura con Bruxelles.   Noi pagheremo per decenni questi quattro anni di incompetenza. Letteralmente. Di quei 194 miliardi, 122 sono prestiti. Solo nel 2026 paghiamo 2,8 miliardi di interessi, dal 2027 saliranno a 3,4 miliardi l’anno. Per vent’anni. I nostri figli salderanno il conto di una festa che non c’è stata.   L’Italia non è migliorata. L’Italia non ha fatto un salto avanti. Il PIL non si schioda dallo zero virgola, mentre la Spagna con trenta miliardi in meno di noi è cresciuta del 2,8%. Cinque volte tanto, con lo stesso identico piano europeo. Ma la signora Meloni si vanta perché il suo è il secondo governo più lungo della storia repubblicana. Brava. Complimenti.   E mentre i 194 miliardi le scivolavano fra le dita, sapete a cosa pensava lei? Ai centri per migranti in Albania. Seicentosettanta milioni stanziati, parola del ministro Piantedosi, per due strutture vuote, dichiarate illegittime tre volte dai tribunali, oggi al 46% di capacità. Centocinquemila euro al giorno per la polizia che ci lavora dentro, contro i cinquemila di un CPR italiano. E nel 2024 abbiamo registrato il numero più basso di rimpatri della nostra storia repubblicana. Una fortuna spesa per non rimpatriare nessuno. Ma per quel teatro lì decreti, ratifiche accelerate, viaggi a Tirana, conferenze stampa. Per i 194 miliardi del PNRR no, quelli sono noiosi, non danno voti.   Che sfiga che abbiamo avuto con la Meloni al governo proprio quando c’erano 194,4 miliardi da spendere.

The day the Affordable Care Act passed was one of my proudest moments as president, because it meant that millions of Americans would have access to health care, some for the first time. The ACA also prevented insurance companies from denying people with pre-existing conditions coverage, allowed young people under the age of 26 to remain on their parents’ plan, expanded Medicaid, and so much more. But the ACA was always meant to be a first step. We still have to do more to expand access and make health care more affordable for everyone.

During the first airing of my Star Trek series where a kiss was objectionable; many southern stations pulled the episode & condemned the show. Using today’s vernacular it would absolutely be called“woke DEI crap”because it went against “norms” of society for its time. Not a lot seems to have changed.🤷🏼😑
