@EvilMopacATX This is the consequence of California, Florida, and the Midwest flocking here and ruining anything interesting about my hometown in the process.

@MLShater I live in Texas, lifelong soccer player. My dad could afford the ‘94 WC, but no chance in hell I’m paying that much to watch a match at the Cowboys stadium.

@m_jeniagd I’m purposefully staying away from HEB’s in Austin today. I e got better things to do with three hours.

@samhaselby @IVMiles Yeah, the Atlantic slave trade quickened global capitalism to life, firing across trade routes that had been established for centuries and then drawing in cities and their hinterlands.
English

@m_myanna @theparthrastogi Screw off. The political economy of the US has decisively changed since I was born in the early 80s.
English

@theparthrastogi We saved to buy a house in 1983, interest rate 18% We didn’t go out to eat, we didn’t travel, we had hand me down furniture. We didn’t have a new car. The wages are relevant to today. I am afraid that our younger generation feel entitled to a certain lifestyle.

@zanehengsperger @tszzl Judith Stein, Running Steel, Running America explains why. The Carter administration.
English

thats actually a really good question imo
mainly national security - a nation that cant build things is in trouble during war (look at detroit in the 1940s) (look up freedom forge book)
steel industry provides meaningful jobs, and has a multiplier effect of like 3x ish
a nation should be able to build it's own things and have some level of control - look at the news from britain
lastly if you dont make your own steel/metal you are paying a premium to build basically everything in the physical world
you should come to @reindsummit this summer :)
English

i think we will look back in 25 years and realize that we misallocated time, talent, and capital at an absurd magnitude
we built unicorns solving lazy problems like food delivery
all while since 2000, US steel production has dropped 34% (108M tons to 71M tons), we lost 5.8M manufacturing jobs, and China now produces 57% of global steel vs our 4%

@jmcayce @brettvito The faculty have more influence on the university than a middling basketball team. Surprising how many people seem not to understand that most students at large public state universities don’t care about the athletic teams at all.

North Texas will head to Oklahoma State for the quarterfinals of the NIT due to a scheduling conflict with a faculty lunch and a dance competition at the Super PIt.
UNT officials say they explored alternatives, but were unable to find a solution.

@Erik_Hamre @HeftyHaruspex To early modern Europeans, “savage” specifically referred to non-Christians.
English

@HeftyHaruspex When our ancestors called them savages, we shouldn't be so quick to not believe them.

@johnalabban4629 @ClayTravis Lost liters are the way to go. Working on a weight loss plan?
English

@ClayTravis Not a chance. WNBA has cost the NBA money every year. The only reason the league is still standing is a lost liter to draw female fans increase viewership across the board.
But the WNBA is running in the red, not black when it comes to bottom line dollars.
